E-brake warning light - Only one side works

Hey everyone, I posted a similar question about a year ago but thought I'd ask again since the problem hasn't been fixed. I did a rear brake job on my wife's 2016 CX9. I put the brakes into maintenance mode, replaced the pads, and took it out of maintenance mode. All works great AS LONG AS CAR IS OFF. Once you turn on the car, only one side of the ebrake will engage. The dealer wanted about $2200 to replace everything. I suspect it's a sensor but don't know how many are back there. Would it be just as easy to replace the electronic parking brake module? Thanks again for any suggestions!

Have you already tried engaging/disengaging maintenance mode again? If so, have you tried disconnecting the negative terminal on the battery for a few minutes to force an electrical reset? Those are the first things I would try. I don't know if a code reader would pick up this kind of error, but that's another thing I would check. If it does throw a code, the code may give you more information to help you narrow down the cause of the issue.

Great thoughts... But those were some of the few things I've tried (since then I've had to replace the battery so I know it was disconnected for a good length of time). It just throws me for a loop that it works fine without the car on, but having the car on only operates one side.

Could you clarify if car on means engine on or power on?
Also maybe try following the instructions here and swap the motor left to right to see if issue would replicate
Both engine and power on. Only when the car is completely off will both engage.
I've seen that video a few times, but based on the comments I can't tell if that is the appropriate way to replace the brakes. Several commenters said they messed up their brakes. I only did it the way by going into maintenance mode.

However, I didn't realize the e-brake motors could be swapped. I'll try that and see if the problem follows the motor. They seem relatively cheap to replace (as opposed to what the dealer wanted)

You're right that is not the appropriate way but I recommended it to see if you might have issue with the motor itself. But it seems both motors are working (when car is turned off). So what would happen when the car is on and you try to engage the brake? Would it not make any sound at all or would it work but engage then auto disengage?

When the car is on, only one side engages. And if you do engage the brakes while the car is on, one side engages, but once you turn the car off the other brake still won't engage. It seems you have to go through an entire cycle of turning on car, releasing brake, turning off, engaging brake before both will work again.

That's definitely a weird one to troubleshoot. I assume only the entire brake assembly was unbolted after maintenance mode and?
Either way we know the motor works. But I'm still curious if the issue would follow to the other side if the motors are swapped.

Did you ever figure this out? I just did my brakes and having a similar issue. In my case they both engage and disengage but seems like on is slower than the other. At one point after the pad replacement, one wouldn’t engage and I had the dash flashing the red brake light and the solid orange “maintenance mode light” which I found to be the symptoms of a faulty or issue with the parking brake.

As far as the disengagement slower… if you put the parking brake on while stopped in gear/drive and then tap the accelerator, the parking brake will disengage but I can feel the car jump to one side and then the other as the parking brakes disengage . Before it used to “pop up” evenly

I put the car in maintenance mode and out of maintenance mode several times and could hear both working. Both will engage and disengage fine and no more warnings or anything but one side is definitely slower. Just want to see if you fixed your issue and see if your solution can help my situation

I haven't figured it out, however what you're describing is one of my symptoms. When I engage the e-brake with the engine off, both will engage. However when disengaging (or even tapping the accelerator) I can feel one side jump then the other. Same situation as yours.
For now I'm just engaging after turning off car. Someone mentioned swapping motors, which I will eventually do (probably next brake change).
