Dunlops out of production

Now I know this isn't that big of a deal.. but why the hell would they put tires on a car in 2001 and discontinue them in 2002. I know that we can get better tires cheaper but come on.. isn't that a little messed up.

Yeah I hadn't heard about this discontinuation either altho I do agree there are many other great options for replacements, I'm just wondering where you found this news out from?

205/45/17 Dunlop sp9000 is an OEM tire that you can only get through mazda. I'm not sure if they discontinued it all together at this point, although at some point I heard that it was a possibility. Dunlop does not sell this size tire to the public or to any retailer. The closest size is 215/45/17.

i tried to order the tire through the place i usually go through. They said they weren't sure if it was discontinued but they couldn't get it in..
The next place I called said it was discontinued. Then I was readling someones post in the for sale forum and they had the same problem

Sears, Tirerack and others all carry or can order our size of SP9000 Dunlops. It is an oddball size, but not an OEM.

gee well since they don't make 205/45's anymore I guess I'll have to switch to 225's huh? Do you think we can get the same mags in 225? I really like the stock mags.

Just had to share my story on this one...

I got a flat just after Easter that damaged the sidewall on the right front. So happily, i head over to my local dunlop dealer to order a replacement. Get a quote of $190.00 plus service, and place the order... Get a call back later that week that there are 23 tires on back order, the tires are not currently in production in our size. SO I get in touch with my local dealer ( Robberson Ford-Mazda, Great service and parts department !!!) and Bill the parts guy finds out that a production run is not scheduled for our size... So now we bring in Mazda customer service ( Michelle ) who confirms the whole sad story. At this point the car has gathered enough dust, so I ordered four 215.45ZR17's from Tire rack.
$625.00 poorer and just a little wiser, I get a call back from Michelle at Mazda. She was able to get Dunlop to comp me a single tire ( Should be showing up at the dealership anytime now )

I received an E-Mail from one of the board members that they found the tires in stock for $132.00 each... I asked for the source but have not heard back from them as of yet. If I get this info I will pass it on to the rest of you. If this does not turn out to be true and if anyone needs a tire or two, please let me know as I have a set of four, one brand new and three with about 1500 miles. Just look up the for sale thread.

You'll be fine with 215/45's just as long as you don't lower your ride. If you lower it, you will rub. I'm not sure if you guys have looked, but the main substitutions I've been considering that are the same size as our 205/45's are Pirelli PZero which Grassroots and Road & Track had on their test MP3's. Or you can go for the Yokohama A520's which are great tires too. I've also been thinking of moving down to 205/40's and go for the BF Goodrich g-Force T/A KDW 2, they have a very aggresive tread pattern and the price isn't too bad at $134 a piece.

Not planning on lowering the car and I am very happy with the 215's. They fit great with no rubbing, and the ride is slightly improved. due to the slightly increase diameter of the tire the car appears lower than before.

I had to replace my tires after only 12k miles do to not balance/rotating tires every 3k and I found the dunlop 9000 sports at discounttiredirect.com they cost a arm and a leg but if you likem then getem right.

I like the dunlops. Their really good in the rain, and stick like glue on dry pavement. But....they also stick so good, that every single piece of sand, rocks, or debris on the road gets stuck to them, and flicks back at the bottom of the car.

Everytime I go over any kind of sand or small pebbles, it sounds like the car is getting pounded or sand blasted. And it's evident, as I 'm getting wear spots underneath the back skirt behind the rear wheels. Paint is actually starting to wear off from getting hit with sand all of the time. It's only minor though.

Now, I've had ground effects on other cars, and this had happened to them too. But, that was after 2-3 years. Not 7 months. I'm blaiming it on the Dunlops, because when my winters are on, you could hardly hear any rocks getting flicked up underneath.

I'm thinking my next tires, probably next spring, will be maybe proxies, or Pzero's. 215's for sure. I just love the way proxies look though :)

DUNLOP TIRE UPDATE

Your ace reporter called Tirerack to find out just what the #@$% was going on in the case of the out-of-production Dunlops. They took a back-order for 1 tire in size 205/45ZR17 to match my other tires...and told me that it will be $129.00 plus shipping and about four weeks for the backorder. The salesman told me that since it is an oddball size, Dunlop is not producing them right now but will after getting an order. Tirerack has now 24 tires on order so he THINKS they will fill the order in four weeks time.

Stay tuned!

great work ace! your always on top off the breaking stuff bondo! (i guess its the radio skills?!) but anyhow, why the hell would a tire company issue four tires, for 1500 cars, then just decide to stop making them...wtf?

I say we all just drop down to 15's and get some sets of Advan A032R's (made by yokohama) Sure you'll have to replace them every year but they stick like crazy.

Well, I still have that bubbled Dunlop on the right front....and am getting nervous.

I called a local tire dealer (Mavis Discount Tire) and Mazda Customer Service and found out new information:

DUNLOP has been sold off to Goodyear. The computer systems don't work with the others. Inventory and factory orders are a mess. The 205-45ZR17 may be discontinued...maybe it won't be...no one knows. I am waiting for a call back from "Todd" at Mazda USA...I had a long phone call on how UNHAPPY I am that less than a year later, I can't replace a tire on my MP3.

Todd acknowledged that "...owners of Protege5s and MP3s have had concerns..."

More to come...

ya know...in just three weeks I am going halfway across the country and back with my family in the wifes P-5.....I damn sure hope that we don't have a tire problem....if I do....I just may replace the whole frickin set on the spot....and bring home the left overs to use as spares for my car!

Dunlop update: I decided to phone Dunlop customer service and b**** a bit.

Talked to "Thresa", who confirmed that Goodyear has bought Dunlop (a real shame). She checked looking for a tire (the stock 205-45ZR17) and confirmed that they are back ordered and not being produced currently. The only car that uses this size is (you guessed it) the MP3. I stressed that I have been trying to buy a tire for almost 6 months and my tire have about 10000 miles on them (winter tires were on the car for some of that time) and have 4 back orders with 4 different places. She is trying to locate a tire and send it to the local "company owned" Goodyear store for me. I'm not sure that means they are giving me a deal or just locating a tire. I don't care.

That's just great. I need to replace all my tires and I can't even order them, what the @*&# is up with that?!?! The reason for replacing them (here comes my tire story) is pretty crazy. About 2 and half weeks ago, I got a flat on my front-right tire(nice hole dead-center in the middle of the tread) and I think it's from some kid doing it on purpose. I take it to work and have them repair it. So they plugged it at no cost to me. Well there went the Z-rating on that tire. Going to lunch on Tuesday I noticed a screw in my rear-left. So again I take it and have it repaired. While they have it on the lift I checked the right-rear tire and found a nail in that tire. My luck sucks. Now I have to deal with having 3 tires plugged within 3 weeks. It sucks to be me!

Ugh. 3 objects in 3 tires, wow.

DUNLOP UPDATE

Here's the latest on the continuing story: I got a call Monday morning from the Dunlop lady (at 9:02am) informing me that a tire was being UPS'd out to the local company-owned Goodyear store. Since she told me that she couldn't give a price (since the store sets the price they sell it at...blah, blah, blah), I am assuming it isn't free. Called local company-owned Goodyear store and was told they had gotten notice that a tire was being sent to their store...however manager didn't know the price, since the SKU of the tire isn't even in their database.

I did ask if they mount alloys and use stick-on weights. Yes to both.

So there is a way to get replacement tires in our size, just a slow and no doubt more expensive than if you could shop around for price.

Thanks for listenin'
