dunlops or khumo?

WEll, time to tire shop.

I need some tires for the non winter months. I have two "new" dunlop 5000M, so I either need to buy 2 more or buy 4 new tires (khumo ecsta ASX or SPT I think).

The Khumos are quite cheaper, but I heard much better than the Dunlops (based on all the reviews I have read). It will come out to close to the same price either way since the dunlops are more expensive.

I don;t race, but I do like to have fun driving my car. I am in Nova Scotia so it is rainy here therefore wet raction is an important factor (something that the Dunlops lack it seems)

Any suggestions? I am leaning toward the khumos....If you think that is a good idea, then which is better, the ASX or SPT.

I never had the 'pleasure' of driving on the stock dunflops so I can only repeat what I have read about them - they suck! I believe that would be unanimous here on the forum.

If you are going for summer tires go with the SPT's. The ASX's are an all-season and from what I have read have issues with tread life. I am riding on the AST's, again an all-season and really like them. Only complaint so far is the soft sidewall, but that is only when cornering hard. :)
 
Unfortunately, I haven't had good luck with the stock Dunlops or the Kumhos that I purchased after that.

I hear good things about the SPTs though. I have Direzza DZ101s and am pretty happy with them for what I payed. They aren't spectacular but far better than the Kumhos I had previously.
 
The stockers didn't impress me. They were fine for normal driving, but I didn't like the feel of them in hard cornering. I have Falcon Ziex right now, and they are a much better tire. And they work great in the rain.
 
The Dunlops are a ripoff, imo. So that leaves you with on only one choice, Kumho.

On a side note, I think it's a funny company name: Kum-Hoe. However, it seems that most pronounce it Coo-Moh. (cryhard)
 
You know, the Dunlops are rated pretty high in most places. Do you think the ones that come stock are just cheapened to lower the cost... and the consequently the quality? If so, then a replacement set of Dunlops from elsewhere might be better than the stocks.
 
Dunlop direzza i worked for goodyear for 2 yrs and ive had both kumho and dunlops on m,y car go with the dunlops thet last longer too

Hey...
Well I think there are Dunlop 5000 and dunlop 5000M. It is the latter that apparently blow and that came stock on my car. The dealer I bought it at only replaced two of them so that is why I have two almost new 5000M.

Kumhos seem prety reasonable price wise....so I think it is going to be either the ASX or SPT. Most reviews I ahve read are for the ASX and that is the Kumho that seems to be put on our car the most.

Like I said, I'm not racing, but like the feel of the zoom zoom!

I've had decent luck with the Kumhos that I've had on different vehicles. I had a set of all-season Kuhmo's about 4 years ago on my Civic that weren't too bad, and then I bought a set of wheels for my Civic that came with the 711's. They weren't too horrible. I currently have Yokahama Parada Spec 2's on the Civic and I'm very pleased with them. They're good in the rain, tho most people say they suck. I've not had any problems with them.

Just my $0.02.

*gasp* zomg have we found an OEM part Edwin can hate on?? I'm gonna go ahead and guess that in Japan the Familia comes with much higher quality tires even though Dunlop is a Japanese company :P

They were ok stock tires. I'd rather have them than some crap firestone all-season tires like Civics come with. Wet performance was awful with them though.
 
I just put Sumotumo tires on my car. Sorry if i mispelled it. Only had them on a week and I'm still liking them. There are supposedly all season tires haven't confirmed it yet in the snow or rain. They were put on 18" rims for 135 a piece. I'm happy so far
 
I run Kumho SPTs on my P5. They are fantastic for the money - excellent dry traction when warm, great wet traction too. The sidewall isn't as stiff as some more expensive high-performance tires, but you get what you pay for. Again - for the money, you'll have a hard time beating them.

With that said, these are SUMMER ONLY tires. The ASXs are all-season, so you can run them any time of the year. If you don't have a set of winter tires or all seasons to use when there is snow and ice, then forget about the SPTs.

And by the way - the SPTs will blow the Dunlop 5000s and the Kumho ASXs out of the water in terms of dry/wet performance.

Sounds like a lot of people are saying the Khumos take a while to warm up. Is this a problem (i.e. aggravating) or is it not that bad. I bought a pair of used winter tires which I can probably get two more seasons out of, so I am kinda leanning towrads the Khumo SPT....but like the "all season" aspect of the ASX....

I'd say mine are warm within 5-10 minutes of driving - maybe just a bit longer than it takes for the engine to come to full operating temp. It's not an annoyance at all, but if I try to throw the car through a turn before they are warm, I'll hear the tires squeal. Once they're warm, all I hear is the sound of rubber gripping the road. (headbang)
 
I can't offer any opinions about the Dunflops but I replaced the stock Badyears on my 3 (bald after 15,000 miles) with ASXs.

They are better in wet, dry and snow and they only now need replacing, after 35,000 miles. That's pretty damn good mileage out of an "ultra high performance" tire... and I don't exactly drive like a grandma.

I'm going to replace with either another set of Kumhos or maybe switch to Yokohama with a higher treadwear rating. I need them to last long more than I need them to grip like bubblegum (the car is three years old and has over 56,000 miles).
 
I've been rolling on ASXs for a less than a thousand miles, but the seem to be wearing nice. They work great in rain. And if they last half as long as they are supposed to, I'll be happy.
 
I have the Khumo SPTs, I like the tires and they ride nicely. Handle pretty well to from what ive noticed. Just got them rotated today
