ok, i went to tirerack, to see if the dunlops are available yet, only to find a "dunlop sp 9000 dsst" tire, its a "run-flat" tire, the speed rating goes from "Z" to "V", and it 'requires' a display thingie to show you the tire lost pressure. i dunno about this, should i get 1 of them, or 1 regular sp9000?

I didn't think the DSST's came in the size we needed...I noticed on Duflops website that they also have a different size tire on there for our car now.

Stock, we have 205...The new SP 9000 comes in a 215 width. HMMM, how much more for the run flats??

i need new tires too. i got 20k on them and there bald
whats the most equivilent tire to the sp9000 i love these tires, also whats the best site to order tires from and how much does it usually cost to have them installed and alligned???

I don't know, I just went to Dunflop's website and they don't even show the DSST in a 205. The smallest width on a 17 is 235. And it shows the regular SP 9000 at a 215 for the MP3.

Original Equipment 01 Mazda MP3
215/45ZR17 7.0 8.7 24.5 11.5 74.1 855 7.7 10/32 21.2 1202 44 0383-19
215/45ZR17 7.0 8.5 24.6 11.5 74.4 851 7.9 10/32 23.1 1201 51 0401-19

That's straight off of Dunlops website for the SP 9000. I don't know. Who knows better, Dunlop or Tirerack?

Good Tires

DON'T get any dunlops. get Kumho Ecsta Supra 712. I have a set of four on my mp3 205/45-17. It's a better tire, good Wet & Dry traction, very sticky and will last longer.

Yeah, I can't find the original sized tires for my ride anymore. I now have the 215/45/17's on all four wheels.

if you have a discount tire in your area i would check them out or go to discounttire.com.
They also have the Plus 0, Plus 1, Plus 2 . size listing on the site. I live in austin,tx and they were the ONLY , THE ONLY people that had tires to fit the wheel of the mp3 and great prices too. you can price match.

Has anyone noticed that the SP9000 gets a lot of "road hazard" flats?

I have replaced two over the past several months and had to mount the stupid donut spare this afternoon after picking up what must have been a big ass screw that it picked up and spit out.

Yeah, that's where I got mine from. They just didn't have the original size (205/40/14)

As for the run flats, only get them if you don't mind the performance dramatically dropping. Nobody has been able to produce a "run flat" with the same characteristics as the originals yet. Yes, they may be safer if you have a flat, but you lose quite a bit in performance.
Just a thought.
The factory tires are 205, but go with 215 Kuhmos. That will be my next set also. The 712s are really good tires.

Hmmm, Kuhmos eh? Michelin doesn't have anything in a 215/45/17 that I've seen, or even a 205. Damn, those are tires.

My suggestion is Sumitomo HTRZ II.... great tires.... great price... I think they are all around better than the kumho... I drove in a civic that had kumho's and now has sumi's and it handles better now, including in the rain..... Just a thought

So many tire choices...I haven't started looking yet as my tires still have plenty of tread left on them, but I've heard a lot of good stuff about Falken Azenis.....I think I'll either buy a set of those or Kumho which I also hear a lot of good stuff about.

Good luck getting Azenis to fit our cars without rubbing. The only thing they make that's close is a 225/4x/17, and from everything I've seen on here a 225 will rub. I would love to put azenis on my car, and if someone finds out they fit without rubbing, I know what my next set of tires will be for next year so I can run STS.

Kumho are just as good as Sumitomo. But the Kumho's not as soft. So they will last you longer.

The latest issue of GRM has a small tire shoot out, looking at some street tires and some race tires. I haven't read the article yet. I looked through it and they have the Kuhmo's in there.

I think they autocrossed each tire and looked at times etc. with the same driver.

Thats nothing with my MX6 last year I hit a pot hole and blew the tire and bent the rim. 2 weeks later I get home a notice one of my tires is a little flat. 3 of my tires 1 new had screws in them. 1 tire had 7 screws in it! The dunlops on the MP3 have been fine, no flats and it looks like the tire rack has our exact dunlops now.

Hey StutterC...is it possible for you to post some of their findings for the better tires? I'd be curious as to what they found to be the best.
