Dropped something in the transmission! Help!

Hey yeah just so ya know. I had something like this happen once on one of my old Jetta's. Let's just say within about a week We had to take the tranny out and rip it apart because it got stuck in reverse and would not come out. So just to be on the look out. Best of luck to ya!

Was it a plastic piece that got stuck in (and a soft plastic at that)?

Yes it was about the same as the little cap he talks about. I was told by my father it would get chewed up and not to worry 2 days later I had to have it towed home because the tranny locked up.

Oh s***... that's what I've gotta say...

Anyone know approximately how much it'd cost to get a shop to open up the tranny?

And anyone know what kind of temperatures the oil gets to? I wonder if it gets hot enough to melt the plastic. I just really hope it either gets chewed up or melts well enough to come out when I dump the fluid (which I'll probably do within the month, given nothing happens...) *crosses fingers*

it sucks kinda, but its doable
Opening up the tranny, you mean? Haha, I don't think it's something I wanna be doing myself, especially when I was stupid enough to drop something in it.

What kinda tranny is it? Auto? Manual? If it's a manual, you may be able to get a shopvac, w/ a narrow hose, and try to suck out some fluid, and u may get the cap

It's manual. No shopvac I can get my hands on, though, so I wonder whether they'd be willing to try to do it if I take it to a shop, or if they'd just laugh... haha...

I wouldn't suggest driving it if u could aviod it...have u tried jacking up the rear so that fluid comes out the front?

Ah, I've already driven it, unfortunately. What I'd really like to know is what the transmission is shaped like inside, where all the empty space is, to see if there's any real chance of it coming back out a hole. I havn't tried jacking up the back, but I have tried overfilling the tranny while the front was jacked up and then letting it down so oil flows out, and the cap was nowhere to be found.

Not exactly the same, but I dropped a little plastic piece into my engine a month or so back. I haven't had any problems, but then again in the engine it will surely get crushed and or melted.

Look on the brightside, if it breaks, you'll have a reason to upgrade stuff! Hey, my transmission is shot... might as well throw LSD etc while they are working on it :)

Wow, I'm surprised, with the high pressure and stress inside the engine I would have thought it'd cause problems for sure.

Haha, I'm sure upgrades would be much more satisfying without spending who knows how much on getting a new transmission put in. :D

dude, there isn't much that will get affected by this,it's soft plastic, and the gears are hardend steel, and it will be damn near impossible to affect the syncro's.

there isn't much you can affect,if it were a auto, then you could be having some issues from it cloging passages, but no,your pretty safe.

A manual trans should chew that up very quick, auto = your screwed.
I would go for a tranny flush anyways, this will replace all the fluid. And if you live in a colder area get synthetic fluid.

*update*

Okay, I changed my fluid again today. When I got the oil out, there was no visible bits of plastic, but there were a lot of very small metalic particles. Last time I checked, plastic products don't reflect light like that, so I hope nothing is going on with my gears or something. But oh well, that's the end of that. Car seems to drive fine, so whatever.

On another note, this time I found some Castrol Syntec fluid, and put that in place of the no-name Canadian Tire synthetic crap I got last time (because I couldn't find anything other than that for a reasonable price before), and the difference was like night and day! With the no-name stuff the shifts seemed a lot more ambiguous and I missed a couple in the course of these weeks, but the Castrol made the shifts VERY VERY smooth, easier to shift into first on a start and easier to do the first-second shift.

You were able to find manual transmission fluid at Canadian Tire? Every time I've looked there was only automatic.

Same here, only ATx stuff from what I've seen at CT. I ended up ordering a case of Motul Gear 3000 from a dealership here that stocks Motul products.

I realize most people don't just have a bunch of money laying around but I would suggest in your case going to a shop and having them flush your tranny. the small metal shavings aren't a bad sign necessarily so I wouldn't get worked up about that but for less than $50 you should be able to get it flushed and buy the fluid to have them fill it up again.

if you're happy with it then go with it, but my concern would be that for $50 of insurance now could theoretically save you a crapton later...
