Drain or flush coolant?

Then you haven't talked to many people. Considering distilled water is like, 50 cents a gallon, I think it's money well spent.

And yes, one coolant change with tap water probably wouldn't do harm if you changed the coolant regularly. But most people's cooling systems are already in crap shape, and that tap water would likely sit in the engine for another 150,000 miles.

....well in b.c. it ain't trust me, its actually quite expensive....but then again to each is own, oh and i have spoken with many shop profs and mechanics seeing as how i worked in a service bay/parts department before....

what you may be forgetting though is that most people aren't to knowledgeable on this topic and not all people know that they should be using distilled water, as its far purer then tap water, though i believe (and this is my belief) that if it were as important as using the correct style of rad fluid, or engine oil then the manufactures would be stating it right on the overflow box or the rad cap itself. (and perhaps not just in the owners manual.)

you're forgetting that they didn't build cars for the DIY'er... they labeled s*** under the hood in a minimalistic fashion... a trained technician who has access to information and special tools is the expected person to do the job!

i don't know if you could honestly say thats true, i believe the manufactures will put information on certain parts of the engine, not in a "minimalistic fashion" as you put it, but more for a sense of knowing that they themselves are covered from the DIY's that believe they have the ability to try to solve a problem that has occurred under the hood. In doing so the manufactures there fore have a cover if something were to go wrong and the owner was trying to fix this problem and then blame the manufacture.....

....but now were drifting to far off topic. my apologies

that is not true, otherwise how'd you explain the "power steering fluid" cap under the hood? do you put power steering fluid in like it says or use ATF? you use ATF like the manual says because PS fluid is wrong! the cap just tells you what fluid/bottle it is for, not the type! it's the stupidest thing mazda has ever done to our cars

+1. I cringe when I think of the people happily pouring the PS fluid in their reservoirs that is labeled for "all makes and models"

I'd still use distilled water if it were 10 times that expensive! :)
