2002 Protege 5
Hey all :)

I'm new here... and I'm hoping someone can help me. I'm planning on installing my Pioneer deck in my P5 but not too sure about a wiring harness. I heard some others having problems with this. I got the "how to remove the dash trim" from this site, but I also need to know if I'll need a mounting kit.

If anyone has done this, please let me know! Any pointers would be appreciated :)

Thanks!

just did this last weekend on my girls p5, its a b****! if you can spare the cash i suggest taking it to circuit city or something. the entire stock stereo actually comes apart in pieces, on each side you have to remove a long thin cover piece, beneath that is a rectangle hole that you can stick somethnig in and squeeze the tabs that hold in the stereo, then it just pulls out. you can get a mounting kit for an older protege from stereo shops and use it to fill the bottom din they will also have a wireing harnes, look at it before you buy it, they sold us one that had 2 plug ins in the bag, the stock harness only has on plug in. youll have to use the metal jacket that comes with the aftermarkes stereo and put it in the top din and ben the tabs on the sids and to to get it to stay ( this is the fun part) then put in the stereo. i know this isnt a very good writup, but i hope it helps. pm me if you need more info.

the hardest part is getting the stock head unit out. after that it's pretty easy, provided that you have the correct wiring harness and dash kit. i just ordered them from crutchfield for my kenwood deck at it fit perfectly. i tried for a couple of hours getting the deck out (with the help of a friend. i'm weak, but he isn't) and we couldn't do it using the tools, so i just took it to the dealer and they popped it out for free when i came in for an oil change.

No one in Mobile had ever taken out the radio in a P5 so I was on my own figuring it out, this was before I found these boards. I bought 2 of the Ford radio removal tools from Auto Zone, they fit in tadem one on top and one on bottom, on either side of the stock radio in the holes behind the covers. Once the tools are in it was quite easy to pull the stock radio out, the toughest part was gettin my big ass hands behind it to unplug the wiring harness as there is very little play in it.

i had no problems getting mine changed over. i bought a install kit made for our cars and an wiring harness it took all of about 45 mins. to do. the easiest way is to remove the whole stereo surround. with the kit i bought you have to remove the entire panel becuase the kit sits behind the panel. the only thing that sux was removing the 2 cables for the hvac controls.

Thanks guys (and gals?:) )

My plan is to install my single DIN Pioneer CD player in the uppermost DIN, and putting a factory Mazda pocket in the lower DIN.
I'm wondering how I secure my CD player in the dash with this setup?

Thanks again :)

You can also cut two lengths of coat hanger and make a U sahpe with each one and stick in the holes and then pull the radio out.

If your getting the factory mazda pocket from the MP3's and MSP's, it should come with a support bat that basically divides the double DIN into two single DIN's. On some of my older cars I had a piece of metal that I used to bolt to the car and then bolt to the back of the radio so that it would make it a b**** to steal. The radio should come with all the basics to install it secturly if you already have the Mazda pocket, although it is quite pricey from the dealership.

that's my problem... i'm trying to find a used one on this site, but they go quick.

there's also a cheap one for P5's... not the fancy one with the door.
