Does this sound reasonable to you guys?

a manual car would not distract you from driving, an AUTOMATIC WILL! I've went from driving an auto to a manual and its like learning how to drive all over again. A manual car makes you much more alert on the road, your surroundings, speed consious and a overall better driver. Key thing is, your controlling the car, as for an automatic a computer does it for you. In an auto you can be on the phone, talk to your passenger without having to worry about the car. The amount of distracts coming from driving an auto is ridiculous.

+1

Awesome point there. I didn't even think about that.

About the situation at hand, I think you should give your parents a speech directly about the Mz3 or the MS3 and state why a manual would be a better choice like the genius stated above. I patiently waited for my MS3 and I kept telling why the MS3 would be good. The only things my mom was looking for were Safety. The MS3 is known to have airbags everywhere, so it's a safe car all in all. But yeah, keep talking to them about it and persuade 'em.

Good luck!

I owned a 2005 manual Scion TC.....loved the looks but the car drove like s***. Missed having 4 doors and wanted more power. Got the MS3 and havent looked back. Def worth the extra car payment amount. :D

Those were my points EXACTLY. You are so much more aware of your driving when you're actually DOING the driving.

My parents also are hyped up on saftey. That's why they bought the civic.. for the front, passenger, side and head airbags.

It's not the car in quesiton that is the problem. It's just getting ANOTHER new car in a 6 months period when I'm.. 18 years old. My parents both grew up poor, and drove s***-boxes for their cars. My older bros are always knocking my parents for getting me this type of car when I'm the car-enthusiast of my family, and they are just upset that I could even possibly dislike a brand-new car.

Basically it comes down to a 4 door automatic being a horrible car for me. I like the mazda3 look, so the 4 door issue is null there. My parents just think it's INCREDIBLY spoiled that I want a new car after I already got one. They just don't' understand what it's like to have an interest in cars, modding, and so forth. I would understand their anger if I asked them to pay for it, but I'm willing to shell out my own cash to buy it.

They just can't believe an 18 year old would want to trade in a car right after they got it. And I'll admit, I would be a bit peeved if my kid said that to me. On the other hand, I wouldn't' of boughten them the exact opposite of what they wanted, nor would I deny them if they were willing to pay, and they weren't asking for a 250+ HP car.

BTW, if you don't mind me asking BlackJack, how old are ya? I couldn't even fathom asking my parents to let me get a turbocharged 260 hp beast.
I could just see the convo now

Me - "Mom, dad, I think the MS3 is a good choice of a car for me"

Parents - "..That was a ******* joke, right?" *laugh for 10 minutes*

Haha, I'm 19 and I just got the MS3 back on the 5th. Prepare for a long story.

Before the MS3, i had a 1998 Ford Ranger(which some of you have seen), and it was more than a piece of s***. It had ridiculous low MPG, low HP (even though I had the K&N CAI in it), and it was treating me really bad. Even my parents agreed with me too and it had to go.

Anyway, before I went off to college, I somehow(don't ask) made a deal with my parents for the MS3. What I did was to agree for me to make the Dean's List all 3 quarters (RIT has tri-semesters) and then if I get that, then I can get the MS3. I made the Dean's List first quarter, but i was .05 credit points from the Dean's List second quarter. I was pissed off and my parents knew I worked my ASS off for it.

With that in mind, recently, my great-grandma passed away and left us 17k and somehow my parents thought of a good idea. On the fourth, day before I got the MS3, they made me sit down to talk with them. "So, you know that Grandma Jo passed away recently. But she left us quite a bit of money. We thought it would be a good idea if we contribute the money towards your new MS3."

I was speechless right there. Then, after a while, I was giggling like crazy lol. My girlfriend was with me, so she got quite a bit of a laugh lol. Anyway, of course, like usual, she laid down some rules: I have to make the monthly payments(which is ridiculously LOW, I'll explain later in the story), keep the quarter's GPA above 3.0 (which is easy here), and that's it.

Basically, We went to the dealership in Wayne, where my uncle worked at and where my uncle's brother was the owner/manager of the dealership, so please, consider me VERY lucky right now. We managed to get the monthly payments down to 165/month for 72 months. Now, I only have to pay 100/month because it was the original deal we made and the extra 65 bucks was for the extras (extended warranty with free everything and the special coating). the easy 65 came from my parents.

At the end, my dad quickly taught me stick-shifting as I had little knowledge of it and by Wednesday, I was zooming everywhere :P

That's my story.
Cliffs for lazy readers: made a deal with GPA in school. Didn't work out. Grandma died and left us money. Got the MS3 with her money. made another deal. Making the requirements met. (thumb)

Basically, TheFa1isOutdone(what's your real name? lol), try to make some kind of a deal and see if they can agree with it, or hear their side and see what you can do. If you want anything more, hit me up on AIM :)

so you're the kid at RIT with the red MS3 on different wheels (assuming for winter?)? I haven't seen the car up close but it looks awesome from afar. I always see it parked in J lot, I'm always in T lot (the lot next to it way out in the middle of nowhere near CIMS) because it's the only lot I can park in and know my car won't get door dings or otherwise messed up. I used to park in U-lot (lot behind the SAU) until my bumper got hooorribly scuffed up from some jackasses who couldn't figure out how to park.

Wish I could have made the same deal with my parents before coming here, but the MS3 wasn't out so I got me a Protege5 and turboed it myself :D

edit: nevermind, just saw in your sig that you have a black one.. damn there's tons of MS3s on campus already haha

Haha, I didn't know there are MS3's around here. However, I wouldn't think they are MS3s, just the regular Mazda3's. I know it because before the winter, I was running around campus and I kept seeing those everytime. I'll be sure to hit you up once I get my car here.

I made a deal kinda like that with the parentals as well. I was originally going to go to the University of Minnesota, which was about 18k/year after all said and done. My parents are actually quite wealthy (both work and earn "low" six figure salaries), so college wasn't an issue.

I'm pretty close with my parents since all of my siblings are kind of strange in a way.. so they were upset that I was moving away for college. I then made a deal with them that I would stay at the local college for the first 2 of my 6 year degree, which in turn also saves them about 13k/year. For this I was going to buy myself a new car and give them back mine, and then they flipped the deal around and said if I did this, I would get a 2007 Civic SI (my ideal car).

After all was said and done, I signed up for the local college. Then.. we go to the dealer and the salesman who sold us the LX civic starts going on and on about how she'd love to sell us the car.. but it's a "sports" car and I'll get into an accident with it and yada yada. Outcome? We walk away from the dealer, my best hopes of getting a 2 dr manual civic, no SI. At that point I decided I might as well just stick with my car, but when I go back to turn in my registration for the U of M, they said I had to stay at the local college now for some reason or another.

So I just kinda got hosed on that one... And for the record, I do quite well in school. I've yet to dip below a 3.66 in all 4 years of highschool, currently I'm in 4 honors classes out of 6, and I work 30 hrs/week on top of it all. It's not like I'm some lazy bum who is trying to mooch off of this parents (notcool)

Congrats on getting the MS3 though. I was dead set on trying to get one when I landed a real job.. but when I saw one in person at the dealer, the wagon look didn't really appeal to me. Sweet.. sweet car to drive though (drive2)

Btw my names Jason, hit me up on Aim if you wanna talk - JSChaser18

I've seen two different silver one (different state plates) and a red one, and I know of another red one in Rochester too.

If you're ever wanting to meet up with local car enthusiasts or discuss autox or drag (please no drag! it's a Mazda after all) check out www.roclife.org. It's a pretty active forum, people get together for stuff all the time, even if it's just dinner and a cruise on some nice roads. There's a lot of RIT students on there (myself included) since the RIT Sport modified car club is sorta um.. not around anymore. It dissolved during my first year at RIT (2004-2005).
