Disturbing - U.S. Military as Law Enforcement

Anyone else find this a bit disturbing? Giving the military broad law-enforcement duties on U.S. soil for a reason as vague as 'domestic emergencies' could turn into something ugly.

uhhhh yea there are constitutional laws against that sort of thing but its not like our past and present govt haven't already overstepped the constitution on multiple occasions. And its not like the American people will notice either, just give them 300 channels of sports, reality TV, and sitcoms and they are as docile as 3 year olds.

The military is not a policing unit, this is a serious problem. They are soilders, they are not trained as policemen. They are trained to kill.

THEY ARE NOT POLICE.

yea because you know that the your army neighbor would just shot you. The military is in fact a policing unit of sorts. It just doesnt have the power to do it in the US unless the State or Federal Gov. anounces marshal law. I have been in the guard for 10yrs and I have worked with three federal police agencied and many local police agencies. I have been traded in the laws and regulations that govern us in the guard every year. I think what bush is trying to do is fix a problem that was found when katerina hit. There were so many people and agencies involved and it seemed like everyone was fighting to gain control of the operation. I have seen this happen many times in my military career.
 
I am a little torn on this. It seems a little extreme, but I haven't been paying too much attention to the bird flu, it seems like a son of a b****. I hope that we do not need to have to quarentine people like this.

Martial Law is necessary in extreme cases where police would be better used elsewhere.

no I didnt say anything like that. But in cases in which the police may need help the Guard is there to help. Every year we go over the laws and rights that govern us. Basically what we can and cant do and what people can and cant do. At any given time I can uphold the law of the land as any person in this country. I can not enforce the law like cops do but I can react to you trying to brake the law. Meaning, if you were walking down the street and saw a woman getting attacked you would have the right to get involved and do whatever was nessary to try and stop the person. I have the same right. If I'm on duty and I see you draw a gun in attempt to kill someone I have the right to shoot you. Law enforcement agencies are sworn to not only uphold the law and defend it but they are certified to enforce it. Like I said before, one of the biggest problems with something like a natural disaster or whatever is command and control. Does the local government have command and control or does the federal government have commmand and control. After that is established which agency has the command and control. Everytime I have been involved in something like this the higher ups always fight to have full control. Giving the Military complete command and control basically gives complete control the Federal government and ensures that you dont have a Government and a Mayor screwwing things up by getting in the way of progress with stupid political BS. See the Military, and even the Guard when actived under Title 10, are run by civilians. What the military does is completely up to the elected officials that were put into office by the people. Dont like it vote, get more involved in the voting process, blablablabla

sure he's ****** up in the past. but what else do you expect him to do? This could turn out to be a very bad thing to wipe our nation clean. If he didnt do anything people would be pissed to.
 
Just like pluto said, the military is not trained to police, they are trained to kill. The military exists to fight enemies of this country. So if you send the military out on the streets that implies the public is the enemy.

Titanium you seem to think military training with local police is normal. Which in fact is not normal at all. Mixing military and police is and always will be known as marshall law.

And god forbid this ever happens don't thing for a second you will be treated as a US citizen with all your right cause to the military you will see you as the enemy.
 
sorry to threadjack here, but wanted to address the bird flu comment below:

-you need to understand that we have known the same amount of info about this for 3 YEARS. Bird flu is no surprise, nothing dramatic has changed with the virus. This is all just a big scare tactic by the big machine that we call the media. Happens all the damn time: the media blows the piss out of a situation to sell a news story, meanwhile having no idea what impact it has on economies around the world (tourism, investing, etc.).
