Dilemma! Mazda VS Volkswagen

Stay away from Jettas is all I can say.. I have owned 2 of them and swore I would NEVER own another one...... Had mechanics fly in from Germany to look at mine and even they couldn't fix it... Electrical problems are a given in almost ANY Jetta.... Both of mine were in the shop far more then out in the street being driven... Just when you think you might have one problem fixed, something else will pop up.. In the 4 yrs that I have owned my last Jetta I had put in over 11 Thousand dollars to have it repaired for everything that went wrong... Extended warranty companies are not the answer, as I had one and was told that almost NOTHING was covered on it..... VW's rep has been ruined far to the point of ever going to be able to bounce back.... They have NOT made a reliable car since the late 70's Early 80's I got rid of mine for a 2008.5 Mazda 3 and it has been the BEST move I have ever made

ok........right..someone flew in to fix a car...:bs:....ive owned/ own 6 mk4 golfs and jetta and none have had or will have electrical problems...get a life bro.....its a very very low percentage of vw have electrical problems..i mean very low...this guy is full of crap...(blarf)

if you wind up getting the jetta make sure you get a stick not the tiptronic. i have both cars sitting in my driveway and i bought the protege and my bro is a freshmen in college and he bought the jetta, ya the jetta is faster but he spent 5k more than me and his tiptronic has no control what so ever. i have an 03 es and the tiptronic is very controable, my bro cant engine brake cuz the car just up shifts and the protege comes with better suspension

Im stuck between getting a newer protege or a volkswagen jetta
Stop right there. First thing is not to select a car, but to select a price range. Pick a number that's financially acceptable to you and don't ever go above that number because that's all you can afford to spend. Provided these are cars within your price range, look at competing manufacturers' vehicles as well. Let's say that price limit is 5000 dollars, since that's about what Protege ES's are going for on Craigslist. For 5000 dollars, a few competing vehicles are 2002-2003 Dodge Neon ACR's (non-turbo, not SRT-4's with ACR performance package), Mitsubishi Lancers before the 2003 model year, Contour SVT, Focus SVT, Escort SVT, various Civics, VW Golfs of varying model years, Nissan 240SX, the occasional MR2 (if you don't mind a late 80's early 90's vehicle) and many others. Remember, run the VIN before considering a purchase, check the reciepts from service done on the vehicle so you can see what was replaced and what wasn't, and what problems are recurring and what you may be inheriting. Don't lock yourself into a vehicle choice because it limits options and exacerbates the situation. Flexability is important, and all of the cars just previously listed get good fuel economy, have adequate performance at least on par with your Protege ES choice (with the Contour having the largest engine of the group save that very rare MR2 going for cheap and the ACR probably having the best suspension of the group).

The jetta is a turbo but the protege isnt
Anyone know anything about jettas are they better than proteges?

by the way im looking at a 01-03 protege es
Jettas are relatively reliable. The horror stories are far and few between. I know 5 people off the top of my head with Jettas of varying model years with no problems, electrical or otherwise. They are also faster but have more expensive parts.

AHH !
So after all this bulls*** with me having to pay for my own car my parents got me a ******* brand new Volkswagen R32!!! as early graduation presents haha!
Ahh s*** my protege is in the dumps now :D
