Dilemma! Mazda VS Volkswagen

Yeah true
well im gonna keep on looking
i think im swinging more towards the BMW/VW after looking into the late 90's model BMWs

exactally, I'm not bashing on mazda...I love mazdas...but theres a lot more out there than just mazdas and vw

*hisses* i hate hondas for one reason.. well 2 really. 1 my step mom owns a minivan XD and my bros getting 96 civic i think? and because mazda > honda :P
but there nice cars imo i like the new accord tail lights (led) and the interior. but to be dead on... my all out fav car is the Ferrari F430 F1 Spider now how many 17 year olds can claim they have drivin one weakly to DQ and gets every hot chicks number XD but i think you should go with Mitsubishi

Well to me Honda > Mazda. I dislike Mazda because my car would always break down on me and the dealership service departments sucks ass. My RSX and Integra never failed me and I'm sure my civic won't as well.

Honda makes some of the best clutches and shifters I've driven, I'm in love with the close ratio 6 speed in my civic, and the ride is smooth as hell, i just need to get this break in period over with, i still haven't gone into vtec yet.

agree with you on the first point, but the second paragraph...LOL, I cant stand the k20 shifter, its absolutely horrible...and the clutch is complete crap from the factory

To me its butter, clutch is light the shifting is smooth and not notchy.

I thought it was quite the opposite, shifting is really notchy...and you can't rush shifting, you have to wait a long time for the synchro to spin up if you are racing it and so you wind up missing second and third in the process...

my bro has a k20 type-s swapped EMII, and Ive driven it a lot and I can honestly say that the msp shifter is 1000x better and easier to shift

....

vw use's cables not rods for there shifters, so if you think a mazda shifts nice, wait until you drive a vw, you can shift with your pinky ;)

My question is... who here isnt interested in moding their car. That's how I found this website. And nah I'm not new here... But the one of the first things that I changed after I went turbo was my Rods, Head Studs, and ECU to an EMS. All the things named that go first on the MSP are the same things that are usually mod-ed out. But i guess I just must be way off. Maybe I've done a better job with my car than I thought. Are there a lot of you MSP drivers out there gettin' your asses handed to you by chicks in Jettas?!

But you guys are right abut one thing... he did never mention gettin' an MSP. If I were you, and I was gonna keep either car fairly stock and you want an all around good car, look in a different direction. Neither car is gonna give you everything you might want in a stock package.

i enjoy modding cars and am on many car websites. however there's no way i would mod my daily driver to the extent you have and i'm sure many people, particularly on this site since fwd mazdas aren't exactly prominent in the modified car segment, feel the same way and are just looking for bolt ons at most. the cat back you installed over the weekend doesn't fit quite right, no big deal you can still make it to work on monday. the piston ring in the built engine you put in over the weekend doesn't seal right and by friday you may be bussing it to work

AHH !
So after all this bulls*** with me having to pay for my own car my parents got me a ******* brand new Volkswagen R32!!! as early graduation presents haha!
Ahh s*** my protege is in the dumps now :D
but thanks for suggestions

Like everyone else said go for a 1.8t, trust me you can easly fix the turbo lag. Back in high school I knew a lot of people with pretty quick Jetta's. But be very careful with 99-00, as stated before make you know of any electrical issues. Those two years were notorious for expensive electrical issues. Oh and get ready for a lot of bulls*** plastic covering almost everything.

Protege, it would be a lot cheaper to maintain, and a whole lot easier to work on. There power is down but it will get a lot better MPG. Honestly I don't know much in terms of problems with them either.

I would go with the Jetta if you want something fast and Mod-able, and I would go with the Protege if you just want a nicer DD.

Jetta Vs Protege??

Stay away from Jettas is all I can say.. I have owned 2 of them and swore I would NEVER own another one...... Had mechanics fly in from Germany to look at mine and even they couldn't fix it... Electrical problems are a given in almost ANY Jetta.... Both of mine were in the shop far more then out in the street being driven... Just when you think you might have one problem fixed, something else will pop up.. In the 4 yrs that I have owned my last Jetta I had put in over 11 Thousand dollars to have it repaired for everything that went wrong... Extended warranty companies are not the answer, as I had one and was told that almost NOTHING was covered on it..... VW's rep has been ruined far to the point of ever going to be able to bounce back.... They have NOT made a reliable car since the late 70's Early 80's I got rid of mine for a 2008.5 Mazda 3 and it has been the BEST move I have ever made
