Diet and Exercise Questions!

Ill agree on portions... but you have to cut out sugars, and carbs that arent "clean" Carbs ( 100% whole wheat etc). Cut out drinking as much as you can and when you do you want low carb beers, and maybe s*** like bacardi and diet coke. Also diet cokes are so bad for you esp in excessive amounts (stick with water and 1% milk) . You also want to cut out fats as much as you can. If you want snacks try things like hard boiled eggs and PBnJ with natural peanut butter and jelly that uses splenda. Splenda is a great way to add some sweetness to things like grape nut cereal or natural oatmeal.

I challenge you to drink 1oz of water for every pound of your wieght. This will help cleanse your body and youll lose wieght. I've had friends do this and lose 11-15 pounds.

Just some food for thought.

question about cardio. I just started going to the gym a week and a half ago so I'm just getting back to running what I used to run. Instead of running like 30-45min like 3 days a week like most fitness experts recommend, I only run like 20 min or less every day I work out. Thats like 4-5days a week. Before every workout I used to run 2 miles at 6.5-8.5mph(mostly around 6.5mph). I am currently woring back up to that, I am currently at 1.25miles before every workout. Is the 2miles enough or not?

I've found that when I'm out of shape 2 miles is my maximum before I feel too exhausted to continue. Once I break past that aerobic barrier I can easily complete 6 miles the next day. I think if you're stuck at 2 miles you may be undergoing less conditioning than you might, but that's just based on my experience.

PS thanks for making this thread. It motivated me to go on a run 10 min ago (cabpatch)

It's not that I cant run more than 2 miles. I just dont run more because I still workout everytime after my run. For instance, for the past like 4 summers I've run cause I didn't go to the gym. The minimum I would run was 5 miles. Reason I didn't run more was because I would run after I got back from the beach and bore dinner, so time was an issue. But me and my cousin decided to just run one day and we prob ran like 15miles. Granted it wasn't near 8.5mph, but still, it was about 15 miles

Man Imust say, the last three days I've been waking up at 6, going on a 45 minutes run/walk, eating right, and I feel amazing, better than I have in a while, so thanks Johnny!

Vin what are your goals?
I'm basically trying to do a general progression training. I am not looking to get bulky and also not looking to loose any weight. I just want to gain a little mass but get cut. I currently weigh 180-185 and am 6'1" with a 32" waiste. I am not fat but do have a little gut and a slight case of Gynecomastia(I know this cause it was confirmed by my doc. It's not like I have b**** tits, nor do they hang but for my size and shape they are bigger than they should be). I have no idea what my fat % is so dont ask. I do wish to get close to 195 or so eventually.

If you ask me then your running too much... Youll notice your gut and things go away as you train more. I wouldnt do more then 15 min of cardio each day. Focus on training, as your body packs more lean muscle your body will need more calories and carbs to maintain. Thus keeping you leaner. So read what witchdokter posted, keep your diet in check and train hard and you will get to all your goals.

just as a warning to everyone training, protein makes your farts smell terrible, and if you're lifting you should be eating lots of protein. i just had turkey chili for lunch and i know later i'll be feeling sorry for everyone who sits around me

-walking is not aerobic exercise. you will burn calories, and use your muscle, but you are not going to get in shape by walking.

if you can walk for 1 hour, but can't jog consistently for more than 5 mins, then stick to walking.

either way, you are getting exercise and it should benefit you in the long run.

i prefer doing a mixture of both, about 15-20 of walking to warm up and then running for about 20-30 mins with a 5 min cool down. it's worked for me so far, i've lost about 15 lbs since the beginning of Sept when i started going to the gym.

No, you don't need a ridiculous ammount of protein, just a little more than the average person. You just have to eat the correct kinds of protein - Lean cuts of meat. Whey after you work out.

There is no need to eat 2g per 1 lb of body weight. (185 lbs eating 370 g protein). 1.5g per 1lb of bodyweight is plenty.

1.5g per 1lb is still a lot of protein in my book and still makes you smell terrible :)

It is. I don't eat that much, and I lift hard. Balance is better than tons of protein.

I walk, but it's only for cool-down.

ABS Diet is all you need

Just follow the ABS Diet (bright orange book, by a Men's Health editor) and you'll be good. I lost 17 pounds in 3 months with just learning about food and eating better. Got into the habit (zero fast food) and have had no trouble keeping the weight off. Now I'm starting a steady exercise program (but no gym) to get rid of the remaining body fat percentage and get some muscle definition.

It's good to hear stories about people whom made it work. Good luck on finishing it off with exercise. Personally, I work out 2 hours a day, 6 days a week, so I give myself permission to eat junkfood once in a while. I'm on of the guys who loves to eat...a lot. So I'd go crazy if I didn't indulge once in a while. (thumb)
