Did Mazda make a mid year engine change?

Was on another forum where it was mentioned that the Mazda put a newer updated motor in mid year different from the early 2025's. The mid year no longer has the Skyactiv G cover and it is larger. Attached 2 pictures from dealers website. Someone said that is the motor going into the 2026's.

Yeah, I saw that too. Would it make any sense for Mazda to put a new, upgraded motor in an outgoing 2025 model and not mention it at all? I have a 2020 Nissan Frontier which was right at the end of the production of the 2nd gen truck. They put the current drivetrain into the older body for the 20/21 model years as a test mule to work out kinks as the 22 is just a reskin of the previous generation (like the 2017 CX-5 was to the 2016 model), but it was listed and talked about on forums ect. I would think Mazda would have to tell owners what the motor was in the car if they changed it, wouldn't they? If it was an improved motor, wouldn't it be in Mazda's best interest to tout the new design? Plus it tells you what the motor is on the window sticker. Nothing points to a new motor other than a different, cheaper looking IMHO engine cover (which is just foam- it serves no purpose other than to clean up the looks underhood).

I get that but again, does it say anywhere on the window sticker that anything is different?

I just looked up a 2025 CX-5 PP window sticker and this is what is listed:

Engine & Mechanical:
SKYACTIV-G 2.5L ENGINE W/CYLINDER DEACTIVATION
187 HORSEPOWER; 185 LB-FT TORQUE
SKYACTIV-DRIVE 6SPD SPORT MODE AT

So.... No difference whatsoever. Sure, it "looks" different but does that mean it has different specs?

S,Pref and the Select trims do not have CD and I-stop.

PP has CD and I-stop and if I recall the engine now has EGR too (added). This needs the bit of difference in the layout and new engine cover too. All that started in 2024 actually not mid year for 2025.

There are 3 engines - NA without CD/i-stop, NA with CD/i-stop and the Turbo.
Hope that explains it.

Excellent. That may explain why the plastic cover and some of the plumbing looks different. The key it, it doesn't have any more power than before. Whenever that happens they adjust the info. Look at the Mazda 3 for example. It used to have 186hp like the CX-5. Now it's listed at 191hp. They do make changes at times(like the 2.5T going up 6hp in 22) but they memorialize it.

no big changes in powrr, yes.
The big one is coming in 2026 and likely the toyota hybrid engine dropped in as they did in the cx50.
So there would be 3 - na, turbo and the toyota hybrid na engine/gearbox (which is not the skyactiv)

Your second picture is the updated engine with cooled EGR, different cylinder head, exhaust manifold, exhaust camshaft and new intake manifold with tumble flaps.

I am hoping they DON'T use the Toyota powertrain. Not a fan of CVT's. I understand they will be making their own hybrid using a 2.5L and battery. I would like to see the hybrid powertrain out of the CX-90 in the new CX-5. That would make a pretty quick ride.

Toyota has had a lot of problems the last few years with engines, transmissions, electronics, etc. I was a big fan of them in years gone by having owned quite a few, my Scion is virtually bullet proof still at 75k miles. But I'm no longer drinking the Kool Aid for their new stuff.

Here are some service info excerpts about the intake manifold and EGR setup
