detonation or not?

Why am I hearing pinging at only 8-9 psi, with the colder plugs? It seems a lot of people are running higher boost without any problems. But when the turbo is under load and gets around 8+ psi, I hear faint metallic rattling...Could it be something other than detonation/pre-ignition, like the heat shield making noise or something?

Any thoughts, concerns, suggestions, comments are welcome...
 
Every car is different, however I would love to shake your hand if you can hear an msp detonating at higher rpm's.
 
i've tried different gas, still happens...water level seems ok....dont see any oil, but i should get a closer look..

well i'm not sure what the sound is, but i thought that detonation is sometimes audible..when i turn down the stereo and really listen closely, i can hear this noise once in awhile
 
no not yet...i know with the colder copper ones, they should be less prone to pre-ignition, but i haven't looked at them since they were put in...
 
I can hear detonation just fine between 5000-6750rpm. Sounds like a maraca shaking powerfully.

This can occur at any boost level. Reset your ECU and check your plugs, chances are the ECU took to some wacky settings and its causing the problem.

The only defineable ping sound you may hear is at 4750rpm when VICS kicks in and the solenoid clicks.
 
thanks for the info...this sound is definately not just one noise..its continuous...like rattling

its strange, because i had to go in for a cel awhile back that had to do w/ the VICS system not working correctly...they changed a check valve and thought they had fixed it, which i thought they did because the cel did not come back... but every now and then the boost will drop back to stock level, then kick back in....then i'll have to go adjust the mbc to turn it back down to safe levels...I wonder if they are related issues....
 
i just bought a msd knock sensor i have yet to install it.. but it would be a nice cheap tool for you msp guys upping the boost. I read a lot about it on the DSM boards. I have never heard any detonation in my car, i do WOT runs under a tunnel and all sounds good.. im just super parinoid.
 
your piston rings will be the first to go if your getting fuel cut and det. and continue to push it................BEWARE...............
 
before a piston ring breaks, first will be the piston....

i feel some kind of hesitation when im bo0sting too...it kinda feels like a rev limiter but its at 6gs sometimes...kinda weird...what could cause that and what damage can it do??? also, you think plugs could be the reason?

hmmmm dumb koala, beware, if you are saying that you feel some kind of hesitation @ 6000rpms...then you are experiencing the same I am with my car.

Thats a lean spot!!!!!:eek: I have a video of what the greddy A/F shows...

i've had that happen in neutral, not even boosting. Not sure why.
 
When it happened to me a few times, my AF was fine, and i was revving in neutral.
