Denso ITV22s installed - unexpected things

I think the length actually may be a problem. I checked the coil packs and that spring is only half way through the pack. Therefore if the plug isnt far enough up there its not going to make good contact. A lot of SRT-4 guys have mentioned this as an issue with using the Denso's without modifications (ITV22's). When i first put them in my A/F was all over the place. I checked ALL my hoses and nothing was even remotely loose. I have upgraded stainless clamps constant torque clamps all around too. I took the plugs out and checked them and the gaps were good. When i put them back in i screwed them in about 5/6 of the way so the coilpacks would be more on the ends of them. Voila and the A/F is quite a bit better but still off. I'm going to swap the stockers back in and check the A/F and if it levels out like it was before the Densos, they are coming out.

the length is not a problem. the reason why they are shorter is because the fact they are one step colder. it just recesses the tip in farther. if you look at 2 steps colder they would be even shorter than the 1 step colder plugs. stretch your srpings if you have problems, but stretch them from the middle.

Whether or not that is the case, I can see easily on the AP that its better when there is more contact. Maybe we need some longer spark plug terminals for a better connection to the coil pack. I am not keen on the idea of stretching that coilpack wire.

listen bud, the spark plugs are just fine. i have been running them for almost a year gapped at .028 and never had a single problem with them. the stretching of the coilpack spring was a simple thing that us speed6 guys did to get rid of a studdering problem, you don't have to he-man it, just pull on it a little bit. you aren't going to find any other solutions. the spark plug is still the same size just the tip is recessed in more.

dude you prob got the wrong plugs. get them outta there right away! or else your going to go ZOOM ZOOM BOOM!!!!!

I checked the plugs and they are DEFINATELY a bit shorter than the stock ones. My eyes work just fine holding them side by side. The plugs also are definately ITV22's, i checked the plugs themselves. I will likely try the coil stretch mod and see how that pans out.

well there are plenty of people running those plugs that don't have any problems so its all on you.

Just used my lunch break and swapped the stock plugs back in. I took a look at all the hoses and clamps and everything is tight. Without even resetting the map, the AFR's are much more stable than before. There is no knock, the car pulls much smoother and the coilpacks fit down snugly all the way onto the spark plugs. LTFT's are still great too. To each his own, but i would keep an eye on your A/F ratios with those plugs in there. I'm much happier with stockers.

Its your stupid car's fault that the Densos make it run bad!! ;)

Actually I had issues with Densos on my '01 Prelude, I was running NGK's and decided they needed to be changed. I went with the Densos and the car idled rough and when vtec engaged, (shut up you Honda haters (moon)) it tended to sputter quite a bit . I switched back to NGK's and the car ran smooth and quiet again.

Just installed the ITV22's and couldn't be happier. Didn't think swapping out spark plugs could make such a difference. Have 23K on my car, and all the stock plugs were black

I changed mine at 25k, and they were pretty clean still. I think Cboney's Densos weren't gapped properly, my car runs much better with them.

Sally - Hurry up and get the SU TMIC, you won't be disappointed!

agreed

My plugs were shot. i wonder if iridiums do not like boost? Put the Densos in and we are much happier now.

Why are you worried about your A/F ratio at idle and cruise going to 15.3? A/F ratios oscillating back and forth at idle and cruise are normal. What do they do at part throttle and WOT is the question? I've got the IVT24's and my car runs fine with them. I stretched my coil springs out a bit when I put them in.

yes

The Denso ITV22's are also iridium.
Yeh i know but i thought that if they come gapped correctly to start with i might have better luck. And so far so good. But my friend who tunes said he experimented with plugs on a dyno ( different car ) he had good results at first, but with higher boosted motors the plugs did not last long and lost horsepower. I was not there. but my plugs were pretty bad when i pulled them. The electrodes were worn and the gap had opened up from what i set them to. Like i said i am pleased with Densos after about 1000 miles on them!

Newbie Needs Installation Pics

Hello,

As you can probably tell I am a newbie. I just ordered my Denso ITV22 plugs and I was wondering how to install them? I am guessing that I remove the plastic inter cooler cover, the top mount inter cooler and then take the old plugs out and put the new ones in. Of course making sure there is enough silicon conduit to get a good connection when installing the new plugs.

Before I go and mess anything up, anyone have some pics I could use or look at? I'm a visual and kinestic person. I learn by seeing and doing! Thanks for the help everyone!

We must have a How To by now! if not i am sure we can help you. It is not bad at all if you have turned a wrench or too

not to be a dick, but spark plugs on a scale from 1 to 10 are a 1.

unbolt the cover shroud for the top mount, unbolt top mount and boost tubes, along with removing the recirculation hose, unbolt the one bolt holding in the coil pack(you will remove 4 bolts, because there are 4 packs), and wa la, there is the spark plug. remove plug with correct socket, and while reinstalling remember to not over tighten due to the fact this is an aluminum head. reverse those steps to but it back together.

no one has made a how to for this because its not needed, once you start it will come to you naturally.

as for the person with sparatic a/f, did you reset the computer after the plug install? doesn't sound like it, but it really isn't anything to worry about. you should be more worried about cruise knock than a 15.3 a/f, and cruise knock isn't even that big of a deal.

While you have the intercooler off go ahead and get a set of SU boost tubes with t-bolt clamps or just a set of t-bolt clamps for the stock tubes. I replaced my plugs with the denso ITV22's and have had no issues. My car shows almost no knock retard. I have seen 0.3 when I loaded the boost up under low rpm's. I can go all out through the gears and it reads 0.0 I run 93 octane also.
