Deer!

I'm currently learning to drive stick, so every now and then I'll go out with my Bro ('93 MX-6) or Nic D (2003 Black MSP) to a local business district at midnight. The area is completely empty at night and the roads are nice and wide so it's ideal for driving practice. The only problem is that it's near a canyon.

I usually like to start out with a little "Off the line" practice (normal driving, not racing) and I also usually drive a little slower than the speed limit.

Anyhow, we started the trip by fueling up Nic's MSP, then headed off to the business district for a little driving practice. We started out with some off the line practice, then it was off for some normal driving. We had just come off a left turn and got up to about 35 mph when I saw a mommy deer one lane to the right and about 100 ft up. I thought to myself: one deer, not in our way, no problem... get off the gas and slow down.

Then, looking over to the left, I saw the rest of the family. Three more deer in the center divide moving to cross the road. I thought to myself, OK this is a problem... STOP. Since we were only going 35 mph, pushed clutch in, popped it into neutral and started applying the brakes.

So we stopped and let the deer pass. They wandered off onto some business property and started grazing... or whatever it is that they do. Nic D wanted to look at the pretty deer, so we pulled over and watched them for a sec.

Afterward we did some more driving practice and Nic let my bro take it home. (My bro is an experienced driver) Taking a corner about 2 miles away from the original spot we damn near hit one of the deer, who was one lane to the left of us. I was sitting in the back and was the first to notice, after we drove by.

I guess I was just happy that I didn't panic or destroy Nic's car. I've always wondered how I'd react in a situation like that, and it turned out perfectly. I guess that 14+ years of video gaming was good for something. Heh.

Learning stick is fun, maybe it's time to go for a little drive before the sun comes up :)

Yeah I'm really digging it. I'm all smiles after driving around. (Sure beats a POS '86 Escort wagon)

Regarding to my original post, I didn't intend it to sound like a war story or anything, since it really wasn't that exciting. It was just my first "experience" driving and I wanted to write it down. (I have a horrible memory, so I'll forget all the details by... uh.... 2 hours ago...)

:D
