Dealership Rant

03.5 mazdaspeed protege
So i bought a not so perfect condition msp for a daily driver. After driving it for a while i decided i want to get things fixed up (oil drip, coolant leak, new tires, brakes turbo) among some other things. The turbo was not working either which i think is due to the fact that someone capped a vac line after breaking it of the boost sensor or control. The mazdaspeed dealership i take it to does all the stuff an ordinary mechanic could of and then calls me and said it will take $2500 to fix the turbo. After picking myself off of the floor and asking what the world for, he replied well since its an after market turbo we will have to replace the entire turbo system!? My reply was you are now done working on my car i will be in to pick it up!! So my question is where in north central OH other than wooster (where the mazdaspeed dealership is located) can i take my car to, that someone knows what they are doing.

You need to figure out the exact problem with the car, many times the dealer will just say "yep, turbo's bad, that'll be 3 grand" or " Motor's blown, 5 grand and we'll get it changed out" just to make some money. Probably an easier/cheaper fix than a new turbo and even if it needs a turbo stock used turbos (Garrett GT2554R) can be had for cheap.

Thats what i believed to be happening. They were also supposed to fix e brakes which they said would be $180 in parts and $90 labor, after them telling me bout the turbo i told them to stop all work on the car. I guess they just had that left to do because service guy said hey we will split the cost on the e brake if you want us to do that yet. I guess i really dont feel like the turbo is shot. I am not much of a mechanic guy but there is a small sensor or controller that is on passenger side of engine compart close to fender/hood/firewall that a couple vac hoses were attached to. A nipple to where the one hose attaches broke off and thats what is capped off??

picks may help....and there are lots of members in ohio that may be willing to help. you could try posting in the ohio section

There is a boost solenoid over there in the back passenger side corner of the engine bay and having a vacuum nipple broken off will definitely cause problems for the car while under boost. If this is the problem, I would LOVE to hear you call the stealership back and tell them how much it REALLY cost to fix.

I am going to go pick it up 2moro and will def mention that. The frustrating part is when i dropped it off i pointed out where it was broken off. So i am not sure if i am getting the run around or if the guy i talked to was just goofy and had no clue. I will take a pic of it when i pick it up 2moro. Wish i could post pic from my phone to this site. What would a boost solenoid cost and how hard is it to replace.

I had to replace a solenoid close to the EGR valve that my friend broke the end off of by accident when changing the EGR, brand new from the stealership it was about $75 bucks with a slight discount because I work at another dealership. I think most of the solenoids are similar in price.

If your turbo was shut, you'd be puffing blue smoke and there is a chance you would hear a nasty rattle from it. Easy check is to remove the cold pipe (from airbox to turbo inlet) and look inside to see if there is oil or shaft play. Use a hairdryer on the cold pipe connections to help you remove the pipe. Carefull with the BPV nipple when removing it. Also, stock MSP turbos tend to leak a bit of oil from the oil return line, it's the o-ring and not the turbo itself...I never trusted my dealership for my MSP, they always sounded like the had no clue and I had to point them to the problem. Good luck

Park Mazda of Wooster is not what it used to be, they use to be a decent dealership, now they are just average. My suggestion is to find a shop that has a tech that has some familiarity with Mazdas. Call Big 3 Racing in Hinckley. 330-220-3298 and ask for Rick. These guys know their stuff when it comes to turbos and the labor rate is far cheaper that any dealership and they an save you money on parts as well. Just tell him Marlon referred you and he'll take real good care of you.
