CX9 (AWD) Transfer Case Issues

2010 Mazda CX 9 AWD
We have a 2010 CX9 (AWD). While attending my mother's funeral last year (June 2012), a loud rattling sound came from under the car. I had it towed to Dothan Alabama's Mazda dealership and discovered the transfer case needed replacing. Two weeks later, we returned to Alabama and collected our car.

15 months later, I am hearing the same noise coming from under the car. The Marietta Georgia dealership is telling me it is the transfer case and tells me my car & part is out of warranty. The info from Dothan AL indicates my car had 45,000 miles when they replaced the transfer case and now it shows 74,000, almost 30,000 in one year in Atlanta GA...no way.

The MAZDA USA customer service and the dealership said there show no known issues with the CX9 transfer case. When I searched on Edmunds.com, I find serveral postings and I see some on the Mazda247 site too.

Is there a more common problem with the transfer case? I bought this car wanting a safe/dependable car for my wife and children. She takes the children to camps, practices/games/matches/church retreats, etc. I cannot be expected to repair/replace a transfer case ($1,800) every year/two years and possibly have her & the children be stranded somewhere.

Welcome to the forum.
I will point you to a bunch of prior threads that will give you a wealth on information.
Sorry to hear about your problems!
The CX-9 borrows the Ford Edge transfer case. It has a short shelf life. The CX-9 AWD components are plauged with problems, as you can see on this forum.
Your best option is NOT to find one from a junk yard, since they in fact have such a short life, but rather, find a quality re-manufactured transfer case from Carquest, O'Reilley's, NAPA, etc etc.

Good Luck!

I am getting the same issues with my CX-9. Burning oil smell after the drive. Loud clanking noises that come in and go. This morning the noise was really bad and the car shook and jerked while slowing down. at one point it seems that the wheel was locked. Had left it to the dealer for inspection last week but he returned it with no trouble found. This morning it was so bad that had to get it towed to the dealer. After few hours he called and said that the Transfer case (PTO) went bad and needs to be replaced. According to him it was a very common problem with CX-9. I am at 45 K + and it is a 2012 CX-9. Even then the dealer thinks that it will be no cost to me and the TC will be replaced as it is covered through the power train warranty.

I again got a call that they will need to keep the car (initially he said he had a spare TC). So will see. There are a lot of complaints online about the TC. Not sure why Mazda is not recalling this part. Seems according to the dealer Mazda has redesigned this part.

Damn, sorry to hear about your TC failure, especially with a 2012. Apparently the newest part (based on the most recent TSB) would have been installed in any CX-9 manufactured after 11/12... Now, there is no evidence if this new TC will finally solve the problems they are having with these, but also through sources on the forum I've learned the TC warranty is 7year/90k miles... Maybe ask your dealer about it so we can get new confirmed information?
