CX-9 Gas Mileage

:
2016 Mazda CX-9
What type of range are you guys getting in your CX-9? I always tend to have a range of 353 miles to empty on a full tank, but once had 393 miles when my battery was replaced.

It depends. I generally don't like to wait to get gas - old habit from MG days! - but I average about 24 mpg. On the highway, I find that if I go the speed limit+5 (max) my MPG is great. This is the final leg of a quick 250 mile drive to the airport. I got gas along the way but highlights what you can get if you drive the speed limit+5 (max).

I've got a 2018 CX-9 with 70000km on the odo. During the winter I would get 12-13 L/100km (~19.5 mpg). It's started to warm up and I assume that they have switched over to the non-winter formulations, because during my last few drives around the city, I've been getting as good as 9.0 L/100km (26 mpg). This is with 87 octane, and I'm due for a spark plug change as well.

When I was road tripping from Calgary to Winnipeg in the summer a couple of years ago, I think the best I got was like 8.0 L/100km (29 mpg).

On this trip back to the airport, I decided to not get gas early (as it was 2 am!) and pushed it pretty far. Given this is a 19.5 gallon tank, I could have gone another 50-60 miles without much worry.

We just did a trip up and back from LA to SF to visit tour a college for our HS senior - I used 91 and was able to average 25+ MPG including city driving in the SF. Per the vehicles trip computer at least. I didn't calculate my own Avg. MPG. But was able to get as high as 27+ at 70 - 75 mph on the highway without AC on.

260-280 all city. 350ish all freeway. About 14 gal fillup each time

So that's avg 19 city, 25 all freeway.

89 oct. Noticed 280-300 on 93.

We average between 20-21 with typical everyday driving and averaged 25.7 on a fully loaded with luggage 1200 mile recent trip to Florida. Highest range between fill ups was 452 miles.

Just completed an 1700 mile round trip, all freeway at 75-90 MPH with a roof basket loaded up and the interior stuffed with two dogs, 2 children, 2 adults, and all the stuff that didn’t fit up top. Filled up twice each direction so approximately 280 miles between fill ups and 14ish gallons each time. Puts us right at 20 MPG (11.76 l/100km). Car was reporting 19.9 so I think that’s probably accurate.

I just did a big drive north again (600 miles) and this was my first full tank:

This is with speed limit+ 5 MPH, except for passing.

This is just me in the car (200 lbs), a bike rack with bike, and luggage.

My fuel mileage is similar to everyone’s. 23–24 mpg on average. On long-distance trips it’ll creep up to maybe 26. The best I had seen was 27.

Just returned from a 3700 mile trip Houston to Virginia and the Carolinas and back home again, average 27.0 mpg of mixed driving. Left Friday of Memorial Day Weekend after work, so took an hour of sitting in traffic to get out of Houston. Took a hit in economy when we hit the Smokey Mountains. Not much interstate diving on the east coast. 2019 CX9 GT, FWD running 87 octane. We were generally going the speed limit which ranged from 75 in Texas and Arkansas to 65 and 70 in some of the other states.

What about 48mpg for 75mi distance?
WOW! Almost 49mpg is actually insane for a 7-seater SUV. The most I’ve ever gotten was 31.2mpg. Am I seeing your range correctly? I think it either says 312 or 512 miles on a full tank.

You need to let me know what you do to achieve such high range. On a full tank, I usually get 393 miles to empty.
Sit behind a truck at 50 MPH 😂 I have a stretch of road on my commute to one of my sites that is 55 MPH. Instant read out shows consistently high 30s to mid 40s

Out here in Los Angeles

out here in Los Angeles, I feel I regularly get sub-par mileage. I baby our 2019 Touring FWD and get 17-18 city and about 23 combined. That’s with A/C on and drinking 87 octane from Costco. But if I hit the highway…I can easily get 28 mpg. That low torque just lets you cruise at 75-80 mph while spinning at 2000 rpm.
