CX-9 Gas mileage

08, CX9 GT 9000miles

Trip computer must be nice. Could not believe my '08 CX9 didn't have one until after a few days driving. Even my '03 Altima has one.

Anyway, 20 mpg would be great. My AWD gets 17 to 18 best.

Just wondering here, you indicate you get about 500KM to a tank (suggests you are in Canada) but then you referance the trip computer read outs in MPG. Have you found a way to change from the ridiculous L per 100 km read out on the computer. Both the dealer and Mazda tell me thats the way it is, everything in metric (yet the Nav has an instant change button, go figure). My only beef with the vehicle, otherwise we love it, MPG thing is an issue because we winter in Florida and it makes it awkward.

sorry for the late reply

i indicated in KM because im from Australia. The fuel economy i stated was in MPG because i used an online coverter to convert it to MPG because i thought it would be easier for others to compare.

Good news though, the last time i got to drive the CX9, it actually got just a bit over 550km from the tank. If i recall correctly, it only took about 70L to refuel so it works out to be something like 12.7L/100km. Next time I'll try and get more accurate/precise figures. I don't usually record anything when i do the fill up. I just quickly calculate it using my phone calculator after i've paid for the fuel, and then compare it to the trip computer, and then just reset the computer and the trip meter.

Ever since we've had the CX9, we've only fueled it with either 95RON or 98RON, but mainly 98. At present its got about 22,000km. When we first got it, the trip computer was reading anywhere from 13L/100km - 15L/100km, with an average of about 14.5L/100km. Now the trip computer is registering between 13-14L/100km. I thought it had stopped working one time since the trip computer just seemed to stay on 13.5L/100km, even when i gave it a bit.

The trip computer gets reset every fill, so i guess it doesnt' really give a good long term fuel economy indication, so i'll try and not reset it and let it calculate the fuel consumption for a longer period to see what it averages.

Well, I just got the worst gas mileage ever for me on the last two fillups, 13.7 and 12.7 mpg. Don't know what's going on, driving the same way I always do and the same trips, but my mileage has dropped 1 to 2 mpg....

13mpg? Something is wrong with your CX9.
I work at home. I drove very very short trips recently (averaging 2 miles or less) and about 4 trips per day. And, I am getting 15mpg. When the fuel light comes on, I usually have about 250 miles on the trip meter. (And I have tons of accessories on my CX9...!!!)

- check engine air filter
- check tire pressure
- check alignment

Maybe I'm doing my math wrong, but I had 243 miles on the trip and it took 19 gallons to fill it up =12.7 mpg. I've figured out that my fuel light usually comes on with about 2.5gallons, so usually i fill up about 17.5 gallons, which is somewhere around 14.7. Don't know where you get 15 mpg's with 250 miles, unless you're rounding up...

Your mileage is worse than me. It was a bit colder last week, so that doesn't help the MPG. Colder air is denser = more fuel.... My mileage dropped a bit, down to 15.5, whereas in the warmer months I was getting over 16 barely.

Thanks for the info, we are heading out to Florida next week (longest stretch we have taken "Brutus" on se we will see what she does on the highway. I now record the Litres per hundred KM from the trip computer and plug it into a conversion site I found on the web. Still seems ridiculous that Mazda doesn't provide this functionality, had it on my 1986 New Yorker at the push of a button.
Anyway, I will post my findings when I get to Florida. This should be a good test as it is all highway but entails going from cold temperatures in Toronto, through the mountains (sort of) in the Virginia's down into the warmer climes of Georgia on into Florida.
Other than the aggrevation of the metric computer we absolutely love the vehicle, handles like a dream and frankly for a car (truck?) this size we didn't expect it to be a fuel sipper.

Gas mileage update

We just finished a 2000 mile roundtrip to Florida - avg speed was 70-80 on the highway and trip computer turned in an avg of 21.4 for the trip. Very enjoyable drive in the CX-9.

Unfortunately think the kids lost the DVD remote - is there a replacement without going thru the dealer?

Filled up the CX9 today and was very pleasantly surprised.

68.94L of 98RON over 550.3KM travelled = 12.5277L/100KM. The trip computer stated 13.3L/100KM. Over this tank, A/C has been on 100% of the time, and speeds varied from 40-130KM/H. Approximately 60% Highway, and 30% <50KM/H in town driving and 10% gravel road. I'm pretty lead footed when accelerating off the line but apart from standing starts and overtaking, it has been driven on cruise control.

If you inflat the tire pressure to about 40psi (from 34psi as recommended by Mazda),
you will save about 5-7% fuel. (if you can live with slightly more bumpy ride.)
That is about 1+ mpg on highway. Less increase on city driving.
I have scientific data to prove it.
(from a science project with my kid with CX9!!!)
