CX-7 vs CX-9

Hello,

New to Mazdas247, was hoping to find some help. I currently own a 2010 CX-7 Sport and I can say that it has been an enjoyable car for the last year. My only concern with the vehicle is the space, for my job and family a little more room would be fantastic but is definitely not required. As I was driving through our local dealership I happened to stop to see one of the CX-9s that they had out on display- as I was approached by the salesmen we talked about the vehicle and ran some numbers, big surprise to me was that I would be able to afford the vehicle with a little more monthly payment.

I guess my main question is:

Would it be a noticeable upgrade from the CX7 even though the trim levels are about the same? Should I wait until I am able to afford a CX-9 Touring or Grand Touring that has way more options in a few years?


CX-7 is sport (base) with less than 10K
CX-9 is also sport (base) new

Ideas? Thoughts?

I really appreciate any feedback I can get.

Which model CX7 do you have? by that i mean, which engine, and whether its AWD or FWD. How about the CX9 you were going to trade in for? FWD or AWD?

I've never driven a CX7, but from what i've read, the CX9 handles just as well, is much much smoother, and gets off the line just as quickly if not faster than the CX7 and has better fuel economy.
If you can afford it, the upper trims really do bring up the ambiance and overall enjoyment of the vehicle. As good as the CX7 is, the CX9 is kind of in a league of its on. Its much more smooth and refined.

Thanks for the feedback! I am not 100% sure what engine the Cx-7 has, i do know that its FWD. As for the CX-9, its a V6 FWD.

I am going to the dealership in about an hour so I guess we'll see what happens.

I would say
- CX7 is less reliable (statistically from ConsumersReport) - thanks to Turbo.
- CX9 is bigger and heavier - about same handling and performance (0-60 time)
- CX7 is lightly better in MPG
Both are actually based on totally different platforms. People assume that CX9 is a lengthened CX7. That is not true.
CX7 is based on Mazda6 platform. CX9 is based on Ford Edge.

I owned both CX-7 & CX-9. Both have nice power but not in the same league. CX-7 with 2.3L turbo has good acceleration but CX-9 with bigger cc capicity with V6 has extra power & smooth acceleration. Best of all, CX-9 doesnt scream like any other car when hitting the accelerator pedal. Whichever it is, I like both. Never regret having both. Weekend, CX-9 for the whole family, working days for office...Just like the power & comfort....

CX7 vs 9 is like driving a Ford Focus and then driving a Ford Taurus (actually the CX-9 is based on the newish Taurus platform) Just totally different rides. Large weight difference, large engine difference, large suspension and handling difference, large seating difference, large size difference, large structural materials difference... (not sure the 7 uses hss and/or uhss alloy steel contstruction)

CX7 is based on Mazda6 platform. CX9 is based on Ford Edge.

The Mazda 6/Edge/CX-9 all share the Ford CD3 platform.

The CX-7 uses its own unique platform.

This gen CX-9 came out in 2007 and even the current 2011 model is just a facelift. It is basically the same underpinning from 2007 to 2011.

The newish Ford Taurus you are referring to, I assumed you mean the current gen Taurus that came out in 2009 as 2010 model. Previously, the Ford Five Hundred that came out in 2005 was the Taurus replacement. That was based on the Volvo S80 platform. The car was suppose to be good, except it suffered from styling issue (it came out the same time as Chrysler 300 which was bold and Five Hundred was wimpy) and low on power as well.

It was named Five Hundred coz' Ford figured every other manufacturers were going by numbers or just a moniker.

Five Hundred was later facelifted and named Taurus but still the same car as it was in 2005. Only the current gen (2010) was new though I believe still based on a revised Volvo S80 platform.

Focus is even worst. Until the current 2012 Focus came out, from 2000 to 2011, it was still the came car, though facelifted twice I believe. A lot of people were fooled into thinking it was all new.

Apparently the 2012 Ford Escape will be based on the Focus underpinnings.... what a great idea. Gonna see alot of rollovers.
