Hi everyone, I have been in the market for winter tires and an issue I came across was the TPMS (tire pressure monitoring system) having to be installed. This only affects people who get steel rims and not people who are putting winter tires on the rims that came with the vehicle. Well the problem is, with steel rims is you have to install new TPMS which are $50 - $200 per tire!!!!!

From my research there are two types of TPMS;
1] The sensor is inside the rim and measure if you have low air. (this is a majority of vehicles)
2) It's on the vehicle and uses the ABS. (BMW's have these). This is beneficial because you don't require the sensors on your winter steel rims.

Good news, the CX-5 has it in the vehicle! It uses the ABS system. So if your auto shop says you require TPMS tell them you do not require them. Here is a tweet I sent to Mazda Canada and here is the response from a dealership. https://twitter.com/AchillesMazda/status/536950127215132673

If you have a CX-5 you don't need to have it installed. Now let's say it was required to be installed, you would just have your TPMS light in your vehicle on the entire winter until you put your original tires back on.

Confusing post is confusing.

This has been discussed plenty of times on this forum, and it shows you in the manual that the TPMS uses the ABS sensors.

To the OP, I find your information regarding BMW's TPMS incorrect (maybe I am wrong) because in my 2010 BMW 328i the sensors were on the rims and not on the vehicle / ABS. Same was the setup for my friend's 2011 BMW.
