2017~2025: CX-5 Gear Shifter Button Sticking

Hey everyone,

Looking for some advice on an issue I’ve been having with my 2017 CX-5 AWD Grand Touring (90K miles). The car is in great shape—regular oil changes, new brake pads and rotors, new tires, new battery, etc.

I live in Maine, and with the cold weather lately, I’ve noticed that the button on my gear shifter sometimes gets stuck in the depressed position, and I can’t get it to release. When this happens:
  • The shifter moves freely with very little pressure.
  • If the car is on and I shift into Park, I can’t turn the ignition off.
  • If the car is off, I can’t shift out of Park.
I stopped by an autobody shop, and they suggested spraying WD-40, but that didn’t seem to help. I’m wondering if sand, dirt, or something else might be jamming the button.

Has anyone experienced this? Any recommendations or solutions? Appreciate any insight—thanks in advance!

I wouldn't of used WD-40, it can leave a greasy residue. Try blowing some compressed air in just in case there's some dirt in there. If no luck, then try some silicon spray, let it sit for a few minutes then try working the button in and out. See if it frees up. If it doesn't free up you will probably have to replace the shifter handle.
