hello everyone, i have a 2004 mazda 3i, 2.0L just got another oil change and when the mechanic took of the wheel for the brake inspection (front-left), i saw grease on the CV axle boot and some metal piece right on top of it... i have 110,000 miles so no warranty. He said if all of the grease comes out i can damage my axle. How dangerous is this? he told me it costs 225 to replace 1 cv axle boot (including labor), and for the front right cv boot axle he said it is about to crack. so i am not much of a mechanic so i need an advise.

thanksss

Is the cost for replacing only the boot? I thought most mechanics replaced the complete CV axle shaft. If replacing only the boot your mechanic is right, it should be done soon. Not only will the grease come out but water and dirt gets in and the joint will soon be junk.

If replacing the complete assembly it depends on how bad it's worn. It isn't exactly a safety item until it becomes badly worn. Usually they let you know they are badly worn by making a clicking or rumbling noise especially noticeable when turning corners.

yes the price is the for replacing of the cv boot shaft. He said they have to take apart the axle to get that changed and that is why labor is so expensive.

If you don't replace the CV boot ASAP, you will need to replace the CV joint very soon.

As soon as the boot rips, it needs to be replaced ASAP otherwise the joint itself will get destroyed in short order.

If you wait to get the boot fixed - you will find that you have to replace the whole shaft sooner than later.

Putting this off WILL cause more damage to the joint.
