Custom Turbo

A friend of mine who I trust pretty well was talking to me when I was driving around saying "I just wish I had my turbo" and he mentioned that he DOES have a really good turbo hook-up, I forgot. He can get me a T3 for under $600, a manifold made for like $300, and a bigger intercooler than I would ever need, with all the piping for under $150, and a blowoff valve for about $100. He said he can get me an SAFC for cheap. He has good stuff on his RX-7, so I am not doubting the quality. Besides a boost controller which I can get made easy, am I missing anything? I don't know if I want to run bigger injectors, these seem pretty capable. I know someone with a silver P5 that has a similar setup and just pushes the stock injectors harder I think all he has for that is the SAFC and maybe a better pump..not sure.

Should I do it?

If someone actually answeres I bet I could get them a deal too :)

i say: if you have the money, go for it! some kind of turbo will give more power than no turbo. :D

is that price for a new t3? i am going to use a 14b personally with my mx6 because a) it spools faster and b) it wont stop making boost till 8000, and 20 psi and it is only costing me around $150 but it is used. Looks like you have everything you need sept for a oil tap kit and some hose, fittings and other misc parts.

Ummmm, that sounds FANTASTIC! Are we sure these are all new parts? The intercooler and piping for 150 sounds too good to be true. You're also going to need a knock sensor/FMU, something of that nature. People here are using the J&S safeguard, and there's a new thread just started with a piggyback ecu for about 500 that does both knock and fuel management. Sounds damn good!!!!! Be sure about the quality, though.

Thanks for the info everyone...the deal has changed though, for the better.

I am now gonna run a t3/t4 hybrid because I heard it actually spools quicker and is good for 350hp (god help us if I ever get there). I am getting the turbo and he is building in a wastegate (I want to go internal because I don't want my dad to hear my turbo and hearing it go Vroooom....POPOP POP down the block will not help much. Anyway, the internal wastegate AND a downpipe all for $700. The manifold is still $300.

I think I am gonna do some kind of FMU instead of the SAFC and still do a boost controller, I can fit em perfect under my radio cuz we have the double size stock slot...I love it.

You heard wrong. The T3 spools much quicker because it's compressor blade is lighter. There is no need for a T3/T4 hybrid unless you are upgrading your internals. You will just increase the lag.

Big ben is right, there's actually a thread somewhere in here (the labrynth!!!!!) talking about it. The blades on the t3/t4 are larger and take longer to spool up. The t3 is perfect for our car. t3/t4 would be good if you're reaching for say, 400hp. But that would require MANY more mods, pretty much changing all rods, pistons, valves (and timing), cams, cam gears, etc. the t3 spools quicker and can be used for lower (200-300) hp applications. And actually, it's good for well over that, just not as good at high hp as the hybrid. GET THE T3.
as someone else on the board says,
"my .02"

Here is an explanation on why the T3 spools quicker. The T#/T4 uses the T3 turbine(enhaust) housing, and a T4 Compressor housing and compressor wheel. The T4's wheel is bigger and heavier than the T3's wheel. But the T3's turbine housing is smaller and therefore spools much quicker than the T4's. So a combination of the two is the best. But, since the T4 compressor wheel is bigger and heaver, it has more inertia and takes more effort to spin it. But since our motor is only 2.0 liters, there is no need for the T3/T4 hybrid, but the top end power it would make would be awesome if you did use it.

Well I meant it spools up quicker for how much HP it produces. It's actually not really noticably slower because the only thing that's changed on the hybrid is the front housing and it still has the t3 turbine which spools up very quick. Also, I may eventually in the long run put in forged rods and pistons, and at that point I don't see anything holding me back from running enough boost to start breaking axles :)

The guy making my turbo doesn't even WANT to sell me a T3, so much he is giving me the hybrid at the price of a t3. I called up a bunch of big reliable sources and most of them say the t3 is garbage, for their own reasons. I would still run the T3 if it was cheaper but since it's not in my case why not do the hybrid?

I woulden't go as far as saying "the T3 is garbage" but I too am going to go with the T3/T4. I does have more lag then the T3 but not the the point (I hope!) that it will be a problem! Considering at first we will be running relativly low boost (5 to 8 lbs) it shoulden't be too much on the laggy side. But I tell you what, I would rather have the potential of more power then wishing I had it! Not saying the T3 doesn't have the potential. Just my .02!

Turbo... here I come!!!!!!!!!

Uh ohhh:eek:
Here goes the my turbo is better than mine debate.
The t3 is not garbage!
And the t3/4 is an excellent turbo.

I hope that if you put that turbo (t3/4).
You will use a ballbearing center section or a tubular manifold because it will have hella mad lag:(
If you could care less about that then its fine or if drag racing is your priority then you are fine.

Hehe Spoolin...I dunno personally like I said I don't think the T3 is garbage but almost all of the people that I trust (we are talking people that build turbos, also knowledgable friends) say that. Anyway, yes I am definately using a tubular manifold, or quite possibly a ballbearing center section, I am not exactly quite sure of all the details yet of how he is gonna set it up.

Anyway, I do a little bit of drag racing (probably more when I get my turbo, I might even take it to one of the local tracks in Miami or Moroso if I think I am worthy enough) and I think that the only time I am gonna push it enough that there is gonna be a big enough difference in lag, it will be when I am drag racing, and of course everyone knows that from the line, turbo lag is your friend :)
