custom sub install

I am looking for ideas for a sub set up in the trunk... The stock 8" will be removed. I am looking to do 2 alpine 12" type R subs. If you have pics post teh URL or pic.... THANKS

I am running a 15" off the stock amp. The new box is 2.25 ft^3 and I have no filler in it. I designed the box so that it hangs from stock hangers yet leaves enough room to get the spare tire out without removing the sub box. Not super sexy but some serious boom. Sets off car alarms every morning in the parking garage where I work :D

2 a-bahns sealed are crazy? Since when?

BTW, you aren't running 4000w.

It does look pretty nice... I'd use a little better equipment tho...

dude your amp is going to die, 125 watts RMS is not enough to run a 15" sub, not to mention the heat due to the way the stock amp is mouted

It could be depending on the sub. There are alot of POS subs in this world.

12"s always make things a pain in a small trunk like the protege. Becuase of this, its sometimes easier to use 3 10's or 4 8's. Each setup can be tucked into the spare tire well and you can make a false floor.

Here was mine:

Depending on the subwoofers depth and the air space you need, you may be able to keep almost all of your cargo room.

My mistake it really isnt that crazy but also not bad. i wont lie there is alot better. o yeah by the way there is 4000 watts the rest is hidden under the trunk enclosure it was to cluttered when everything was shown.

It's probably 4000W Peak Power... Which means, at one point while testing, it put out 4kw...

Nope!
Its audiobahn so thats its peak power trippled. SO the system is probably capable of 1500 watts peak and 750 rms.

Based on a lack of power, the subs likely to die first actualy.

Thanks for the feedback. I have been running this way for about 6 months now and had it cranked everday. I have noticed on hot days that the performance dies off after 20 minutes of listening. But, I have only blown the amp fuse once and it was when I was playing around with NF of ++. I keep it on -3 now. Even so the 15" on a 125W diet has rattled loose so much stuff in the car I am running out of weather stripping. I am running a sealed box that I designed and modeled. This thing has some serious boom compared with the 8" and is more than enough to annoy the old folks around me at stop lights ;) BTW I got the 15" on ubid for like $30. Sooo, I dont mind if the speaker goes and if the amp goes first then I will have an excuse to get a real amp :D like maybe http://www.onlinecarstereo.com/CarAudio/ProductDetail.aspx?ProductID=13490 I cant think of a better way to spend $200 bucks.

Sub health is all about distortion, keep distorted signals away from it and it should live a good long time. This is true of everything from a JL W7 to a $10 radio shack woofer.

You need to readjust your gain. You should be able to go to max with the NF Level without distortion. Remeber, the intent of a NF level is to allow the listener to dial in the amount of sub-bass they want with any given track without effecting anything else. Turn the amps gain to zero, max the NF level and play some bass heavy music. Then turn up the gain on the sub amp until things start to distort, then back it off so there is no more distortion, and your good. At this point you will have full use of the NF level as is intended. NF level is not like bass and does not distort the audio signal it just increases the voltage on the subwoofers preout. the gain on the amp just needs to be set to match it. Also never use the bass setting, it should be on 0.

Keep in mind that 125 watts rms from kenwood is like 500 watts rms or 1000 peak form audiobahn.

Please, never refer to an audiobahn as a "Real" amp in my presence. (protest)
