custom fab turbo kit or premade?

I finaly have enought $$$ for a turbo kit, but i am stuck on which one to get. I really like the reviews of the HI-Boost and FMProtege kits, although there is a shop less than a mile from my house that will custom fab a kit for about 3800 installed and tuned. I like the reliability of the HIboost and FM kits and knowing they will work good right off the bat. Althoughi think they are a little too pricey. i can get all the same stuff for the same price or a little less. I guess im just looking for some opinions. If anyone else has been in the same situation give me some ideas. I havent got a lot of the small specs of the custom kit. Im not totally sure of what turbo (prolly a smaller garret), bov, wastegate and all the guages and stuff with a APexi SAFC2 or equivilant. Any suggestions would be great.

Apexi S-AFC II will NOT work on the Protege because of the ECU and MAF input. Unless you go with a standalone or piggyback, your only other option would be a fuel pressure regulator setup.

SAFC2 and Turbo Kit

That's right, the APEXi SAFC will not work with the Protege 5. I just about made the mistake of buying one as an upgrade to the turbo kit now. I didn't feel comfortable with the way it was sounding. Didn't sound like it would work with the MAF. Close call!

Also, don't go with the TSI (Turbo Specialties) kit!!!! I ordered the kit from turbo-kits.com, got the kit, tried to install it and nothing seems to fit right. Also, it uses the factory intake, which is VERY restrictive! A good kit should include a pipe (NOT HOSE!!) for an intake. Stick with the big names too.

i would highly suggest the Mental Addiction Motorsports kit. it even comes with powder/jet coated parts and a fuel pump.

a clutch too, right???

MAM is lookin like one bad ass kit, can't wait for tax time and pell grant check from school... who needs an education!!! when you can have boost!!!! But for real search around the forums for the MAM kit

what kind of price range are you looking at. i will tell you that BEGI is a through and through kit. MAM is just being released it looked very complete i dont see any empty holes. both very good kits...

Turbokits.com is def not a good kit. i talked to him alot and talk about a run around... never felt saef enough to give him my money.

i will have more complete pics of the SS kit soon...as in prolly tommorrow...here are a few pics

custom maybe better

well I have a custom installed turbo on mine. Its the turbo from the mazda speed along with drivetrain. This swap was rather easy and required very little overhaul just a few hrs in the ole garage.

The Hi-Boost kit is a complete system which allows you to build up on. I have seen the kit and it look like one of the better complete systems out there. The only thing I'm a little bit concerned with is the intake pipe, but it does look cool?

Custom is $$$ Click the Domain if you want to see what 6 Months and a big wallet (Now Slender) can build.
