Custom 2.5" S-Pipe Back Exhaust System

Hey everybody!

I thought I would share in my experiences in creating my custom 2.5" S-Pipe Back Exhaust System. I had the system put together in two phases.

First, I acquired an used Apex catless downpipe and a new Magnaflow hi-flow CAT from LAMP3 and Warrier04. I then proceeded to have a guy at a Merlin Muffler and Brake put the two together and put it up in the car. While retaining the stock cat-back, my impressions were a loud suction, loud turkey, and loud turbo spool noise complimented with a quicker spool up, spool consistency and butt dyno of making the car feel so much more responsive and solid. The cost of parts obtained from LAMP3/Warrier04 and fabrication/installation total was around $450.00 (labor here in Illinois is not that cheap) to get the job done.

Secondly, I decided to keep the stock MSP muffler and go 2.5" piping from the cat-back and to not retain the resonator. I had this work done at a different Merlin Muffler and Brake closer to my house - a place that did other work for me in the past. The cost of piping and labor total from here was around $150.00. Prior to having this done I had experienced my first "heat soak" with having the downpipe/midpipe replaced and retaining the stock cat-back. It wasn't too bad, but still kinda blew. Well, after I had the cat-back piping done, the heatsoak really sucked, I mean really horrible. Okay, on another note, after the cat-back was installed and everything was fitted so nothing would bang around or have metal touch metal I started the car thinking it would be really loud. And, it's not. I guess I'm used to loud exhaust, but the sound is still fairly quiet. When driving now you can hear the deep tone, but it is still too damn quiet - well maybe not. It looks stock from the outside unless you look under the car. One thing I'm not to happy about but will get over is this one place where we had to do a bend as not not restrict air or to avoid banging, you will see it in the pictures, it hangs kinda low, not too bad, but honestly, the only way I could see it done better is taking a lot of time (i.e. more money) and or mass production/fabrication. The throttle response (not under heat soak) is nice, evens the car back out. Still, nice, crisp power.

All, in all, I spent around $600.00 total. Sure it's not Ion's quality, or may not have the same flow characteristics, but currently, I am pretty happy. I can definitely say with the replacement of the downpipe/midpipe and adding a CAT was the most noticeable difference. All in all, I don't think it's too bad of a job.

EDIT: Had cat-back piping redone as I wasn't happy with it (pictures deleted) and now it is awesome!

What do you guys think? Pictures below:

Looks good! That's what I plan to do. I have the Apex DP with high-flow cat, and want to get some 2.5" piping back to the stock muffler, with no resonator.

i got very similar setup, protosport dp, 2.5" piping all the way back to tsudo muffler.got magnaflow resonator, but have no cat though. spent 560 total including labor and install. love it. definately beats spending 1299. and since i'm not planning bossting over 11 psi i dont think it would be wise to get 3" ion's turboback.

marashka- what type of piping is it? how much was your resonator?

03mspbrian- what type of piping is yours?

Will 3" not give any larger gains until then?

the resonator was around 60, shipped from jeggs. its regular piping that you can get from an exaust shop, dont know too much about it, but it works great for me. :D

3" is overkill on a stock or lightly modified MSP. Unless you are pushing 300 whp, 2.5" piping is the way to go.

are the flanges on the stock exhuast standard? thinkin about slapin a 2.5" pipe between my mid-pipe and axle back also

hey marat u and vic have the SS pipes ??? and how much did u pay for the cat back pipe
i got everything done at the same time....but you can get just the catback pipe fabricated separately for ~100 at any muffler shop, reusing your original flanges. with their flanges its 15 -20 per flange extra....it probably is aluminum. my dp is SS but i really dont care that much about SS. it works and my butt dyno says about 20 - 30 hp were added with 8.5 psi so i am happy.

AGREED - 3" piping will allow you to shoot Coke Cans out the rear and honestly is HUGE unless you are flowing some MAJOR air through your engine - s***, under heat soak, the 2.5" flow so much that I need to build the boost up to higher RPM's before I shift or it feels like I'm driving a truck going through 18 gears.

I am running 8.5PSI as well and I was charged $150 using stock flanges (though for fitment we cut off and welded right to the muffler and reused the flange to the midpipe). My butt dyno noticed a huge difference as well. I'm pretty pleased, and if I ever want to do a different cat-back, I can simply undo two bolts and two hangars and replace easily.

Anyone got pix of theirs for me to see?

I am a little confused about this heat soak you guys are talking about. So you guys are saying the stock ic will be heat soaked very easily with a 2.5inch exhaust? or am i missing something?

i got mine setup the same way....i can switch back to stock muffler anytime,
i can actually switch everything back to stock myself in a matter of 1 hour. which comes in handy when you live in cali and drive catless....hehehe.
dont think i would switch to stock muffler though. its pretty restrictive from what i've heard, and would create sort of a bottleneck.
i kept all mine original exaust including the flanges, just in case i have to put it back to stock.
congrats on your exaust man, i know how it feels.....you must wanna drive nonstop now huh? :D
