cup holder question

It looks like in your photo there is a flip down cover for the cup holders, which is not there in my automatic 2003 LX.

I believe they are the same but there are two versions you need to look out for that ARE NOT interchangeable. There is the covered-cup holder version like shown above and then there is an open-cup holder version found on '03 and up Proteges. They are not interchangeable because the newer version has a center console that sits slightly higher.

thats odd because my 2000 mazda protege has the open style cupholder.

^^^ Completely different from both of them. '99-00 had one type of interior, '01-02 had the closed cup holders and '02.5 and up had the open cup holders but the layout was very similar to the '01-02.

can i get some clarification? i have a 2002 protege5 with open cupholders. i just picked up a bunch of interior parts from a 2003 protege5 and covered cupholders was in the list of stuff i received.

by the sounds of it, i cannot put the protege5 covered cupholders into a center console that has open cup holders?

No, not without an entire center console swap.

If you have open cup-holders and an '02 then you have the '02.5 model - either that or someone lied to you. Also, as mentioned above, covered cup holders were only on '02 model Protege5s. After '02.5 all came with the open style. And no, you cannot swap the two directly without changing the entire center console. There are slight height differences that will lead to gaps in the cup holder areas.

LoL true.. maybe if they where a little bit deeper it would hold at mid of the cup. but i guess depends on wich kind of cups ppl use.. lol Am assuming it would b designed for fast food rest. cups or that sort. i have a 2000 lx, and swaped my interior with the 02 ES. very satisfied!!! looks way kooler.

ok, i think you're right...the covered cup holders must have been from a 2002.5

anyways, i put the covered cupholders into my pr5 (which had open cupholders) and it fits fine. they do sit a tiny bit lower but i actually like it like that. now i'm able to throw small misc. junk such as pens and cellphone on top of the closed cup holders and it stays there while i'm driving. so far no one has been able to tell the covered cup holders didn't originally come w/ my car.
