Cracked Exh manifolds: where r u?

I don't think so....will try to make this a bolt on part.....

I was hoping that you would say that ... its just a matter of what it would bolt too...

depending on where it needs to be braced, I bet you could have something slip over the EGR pipe fitting

Will stress relief cuts help any?? You know the cuts made on the mani flange between runners?????

I don't think so because those usually work best with long tubular type runners....but nothing is positive at this time....

Further investigation is underway....will post info as soon as it is available....

Ok I got ya. I just figured since many cracks are formed between the runners most of the time, it could be a contributer to the problem.

Pleaee keep us updated with info ASAP! I might do stress relief cuts anyway just to be sure.

I did a small google search and came up with some information.

http://www.greddyturbofaqs.com/staticpages/index.php/mainfaq

This is a common problem with the greddy turbo kits for the miata. Please click the link and go down to see the point of the manifold relief cuts. If I come across more info I will make sure to post it.

- My thoughts on this is that it should help the MSP manifold. Even though the materials might be different, the stress from heat and contraction and movement of the metal puts stress on the connected flanges runners. The cuts should provide some relief and take the stress off the middle of the runners.

I will be getting cuts made on my manifold before I install it. Sometimes I am in too much of a rush to take pictures but I will try my best to get some up for everyone.

so you're going to do it like this?

Yep I am going to try that. Those cuts should take the stress off of the runners by allowing the manifold to contract from the heat, etc. I will most likely cut the middle part of the flange also. I have seen many manifolds like this, but I will also wind up putting a brace on it for extra support.

bump for some updates

I talked with the engineers at Callaway Cars on Thursday. we have some ideas but I would like to get some more info before I finalize.....

Therefore, I PM'd a few but anyone else who has had cracking of the OE MSP manifold....

1. Do you have the OE S-pipe, J-pipe, and exhaust?
2. If not what items have you replaced?
3. For how many miles did you run the OE and now the replacement?

Once I get some data I should have an idea of what is happening here and a possible solution.....

i have a huge crack in between 2&3 and a smaller one in 3&4 and that is only just looking at it with the heatshield off. i will be dropping off my whole turbo setup because im upgrading to a T3/T4 so i will take pics and post if there are any more cracks when i remove it

also:
i have the 3" turbo back GHL exhaust so not a OE downpipe no
i also have about 65,000kms (not sure miles) on my car but only probably 25,000km on the new dp and exhaust system. and after replacing the exhaust the mani started to crack. it has been noticeable cracked now for probably 8,000kms or so. it is so bad now that when i was tuning my car and running rich, the black smoke was pouring out of the vents in my hood (looked like something on fire)

my suggestion is that we need a turbo bracket that holds that in place to take the wieght off the mani and for those who upgrade their exhaust, don't take out the flew pipe at the bottom of the DP and put another brace on the exhaust like the stock one had by the DP also.

i know the mani cracked a lot more from my engine getting tossed around because my engine mounts are shot. and with all the extra weight on attached to the manifold and the extra rigidity of the upgraded exhaust...

all these factors come into play

is there any replacement manifolds that can replace the oem callaway mani?

or maybe it's better to buy the oem ??

not only has mine cracked but it also managed to pull a little from the head snapping the top left bolt and the stud to the right of it off in the head so i now need to spend time and pull the manifold and turbo off the put an easy out on those bold and see if i can get the manifold fixed.

Mine Calaway manifold cracked between each runner and I had OEM "S" and "J" pipes. The lower "J" pipe bracket was also broken. This was after about 45,000 miles, but I commute 95 miles a day.
My same manifold bolt popped its head, and the extreme passenger lower bolt was missing entirely. I was able to easy-out the broken bolt, but another bolt broke trying to take it out, the easy-out did not work, it broke off inside. I had to hand drill around the broken easy-out, then Jen-Weld the hole in the head, and then drill & tab for the new bolt.

I believe the manifold cracks are due to stress from thermal expansion of the head flange. Short runners can not take alot of stress the way longer runners could. The manifold flange cuts might help, provided the bolt holes are bossed and larger washers are used under the bolt heads.

sub'n,

I assume with this bracket in place it will help prevent my corksport s/j pipe from cracking + motor mounts !!!
