NO WAY! As if they'd let regular Joe blow go and change his air/fuel mappings, blow is exactly what would happen.
upsolute, apr etc don't charge 1K for their chip though, they are usually 300-500bucks at most. when i could pay $500 more than the CS unichip and have the mapping custom tuned for my car and run it as a standalone if needed, the $500 for the AEM is worth it.
companies like Cobb and Vishnu offer affordable pcm reprogramming, but they come in stages, and can't be altered.
Binary- you do realize that AEM only sends out their units with a base map to start the car, usually not even a suitable one for driving? AEM does not tune their units, you must find a tuner for that. you have to dyno tune the unit immediately if you are going to use their EMS, what TPW and WM is offering is complete support for their tuning and months of R&D. check out their thread in FI to get the details.
back ontopic- the CS chip would be a great option for a light/moderate enthusiast that doesn't want the hassle of the AEM, and doesn't mind giving up some control. if the price drops a bit, i bet a lot of people wil purchase it.
