Coolant mixed with oil, beyond repair? 2012 CX-9

My coolant leaked into engine body (I guess failed water pump) and there is awful knocking noise which happens somewhere around top/passenger engine side. Is this beyond reasonable (without engine removal) repair?

Unfortunately, this is a known problem with this (Ford) engine.
Same thing happens with the Explorer.
No personal experience, but from what I have read on here, and on Ford forums, there's a good chance your engine is toast.
Do a search on this site, as well as Ford forums for more information.

The knocking is a concern.
You'd have to tear into it to get a better idea of what's bad.

You could get lucky and swap the pump, add new oil (couple short interval changes) and have it be fine, but most likely going to be more severe damage based on the knocking comment.

The cost of removing the engine from the car to put in a new water pump makes it a risk to put that engine back in only to find out that is must be replaced. There are some tests that can be done including an oil analysis that looks for excessive amounts of wear metals. Start planning on an engine replacement, though.
