Continued "Check Engine" light with no code after replacing gas cap

:
2016.5 CX-5 Touring
It's been a while since I've been in this forum but I'm stumped. I have a 2016.5 CX-5 Touring wtih 158000 miles on it. Well maintained overall. For the last few months, the check engine light has come on and off intermittently. It first started when I let my 20 yo son fill it with gas. The first code it threw (at a generic auto store) was the gas cap. It took me a couple of weeks to hunt down an OEM gas cap. In the meantime, it had an oil change/tire rotation at my usual garage and I asked them to check and they said there was no history of any codes. I finally got the new OEM gas cap and put it on, and since then, the light has been more on than off. Car runs fine, though it's cold so it's loud at the start.

Where do I go from here?

Take a look in the left rear wheel well. You can see the fill tube that goes from the fuel door/port down to the tank. Look for any damage or missing/loose clamps.

Do you smell any gas or see any gas residue on ground when fueling ? Next up would be evap system.

I don't think your son did anything to it. Just coincidence that he happened to be the one fueling it THAT time.
