Considering Selling for an S4...

i see this one all the time... pretty car. i would almost consider owning one... much better vehicles now than they were building in the 80s.

you kidding?? The 80's was Audi's golden age...the sport quattro? The S1?

no, not kidding... had a friend that had a quattro, what a shop queen POS... and the 4000 series... what a joke of a car. spent more time trying to get expensive parts to fix these cars... yeah, they made good performance, when they worked, but i would have never owned one.

My mazdaspeed has been reliable..*knock on wood* not only that, but its a lot easier to work on then an audi S4 in my opinion...

I've friends who were into Audis. One was even an S4. Those things were always having issues... expensive ones at that. With that said, I don't think I'd go from a newer car to a 10 year old car with 100,000 miles. If possible, I'd keep the MS3 for the fun daily driver and get the S4 as a project.

Sounds like it could be a great project for you.

Its weird because right before answering this I was looking at 05+ S4's. They seem like a more mature yet still fun car to have.

They do seem more mature but with the same idiot driver in it lol. Na, whatever floats your boat. The S4 is a nice car but as for me the Speed3 is still new and unique to me.

I was looking at these before I got my speed3, I went with the speed cause mileage on the ones I found where to high and they wanted to much $$$, The timing belt job is a lot of cake, and diverter valves are faulty( Boots ripping, leaking) and need to replaced with up graded ones. I love the car but looking at 100k miles and 10k + 3k in work was not what I was looking for.. +1 for the guy they said the electronics( Something they are known for)

if it works for you then go for it. i would have reservations about a 100k mile, 10 year old car being deemed a reliable daily driver. especially one that has been modified. i'd say of that $9k difference just set some aside for potential issues. don't spend it all on mods.

don't B5s have front suspensions that need to be replaced? control arms or something, i don't remember what goes bad, but something in the front suspension wears out and is a pain to swap.

I was never a fan of the B5 looks-wise. The maintenance costs for such a car are just worsened by the very high mileage. Also, I wouldn't use the maturity argument for a B5 S4 as the majority of people I see riding around in them these days are young guys who get them for cheap.

I hear you on the phases, thing. I used to want a Z4 M, but decided against because I don't like the idea of paying so much for valve adjustments. Now I'm on a C5 Z06 hunt, but I doubt I'll end up with anything. The Z06 can be had for an unbelievable price if you look hard enough.

Just so you know, to do the turbo swap you have to pull the ENTIRE motor out of the car.....everyone isn't kidding when they say this car is a b**** to work on.

I love Audi's but I won't buy one, my GTi had enough annoying issues to steer me clear of the two makes. But from what i've read on here Mazda's aren't the cheapest on maintenance either.

+1

Just did a quick Autotrader search, you can find a decent 2001 - 2003 C5 ZO6 for a little more than a Audi S4 B6. B6's start in the high teens and go well into the 20's. With the ZO6 Vette going around the low to mid 20K range you'll get 405hp with 3.9sec 0-60 and a 11.9 1/4 mile stock. 1.03 skidpad ain't bad either! Many of these cars are weekend machines so there are hidden gems out there.

So if going S4 get the B5 so you can save money for upgrades over getting the B6 as the B5's are going for around 8K to low teens depending on miles and condition. If going B6 then go ZO6. Just my .02

Vette- less daily driveability (i.e. no back seats, less storage, more 'rarity' factor, lower and less comfortable).

Oil burners?

Scott,

The S4 b6 is a very beautiful car. I believe this is a 40 valve, 4.2L V8 that just sings a great tune through its' exhaust. With 0-60 times in 5 seconds and AWD handling it is an excellent performance sedan. Not to mention that AUDI has one of the best exterior paint jobs and offers the best interior quality features in the industry.
But 96,000 miles concerns me. You would probably know best how it was maintained as you already have a planned list of mods. The only complaint I hear about them is that they burn oil. I'm sure that some burn more than others, some probably burn very little.
Overall I think this car is a little mature for you. I mean I see a lot of old dudes like myself driving around in this kind of car, (lol).
I see you driving a new Mustang V6 Vert. Like the dark grey one on the recent tv commercials. You could always slap on a paxton supercharger for a nice exhaust note and have unbeleivable sleeper potential.

Honestly, the thing is, people can say what they want. But, at the end of the day, the S4 can do this...

granted, that car has twin 28's, but still...you get the picture. People that say European cars a b**** to maintain have no idea what they are talking about. Sure, there is always going to be some stupid ass whom beats the s*** out of it and then complains because it breaks, but in general, they are very reliable. I've seen factory S4's go 250,000 miles on original(s***) K03 turbos. If the car has been cared for, it will go forever, and sure, stuff costs a lot to replace, but like I said earlier, if its cared for, they go forever, and strong. My family has a 2001 BMW X5 3.0i with 130,000 miles on the clock, and not only does it look brand new, but it drives the same as it did off the factory floor. We plan on keeping it for 200,000+ miles. I have fully decided to buy an S4 and have located a tech-owned ASP Stage 3 S4 in Southern California with about 118,000 miles on it. It had new belts, tires, brakes...every thing done in the past 10k miles, and not to mention, brand new heads 1 year ago. Its good to go for another 100k. Im not dead set on this car, but i'd like to get it.

For anyone interested in my car, here is the craigslist posting...
