Thanks. Yeah the car I drove was new. So do I get this right, it's a little stiff, it can be imroved some with aftermarket parts, but it's not going to be great.

No it's great, no......AWESOME. I don't care what little niggles I have when I stomp my right foot :-D

Drove the MS3, WRX and GTI on the weekend... they're all good, fun cars, people should chill a bit

Question wrt the transmission, I was very unimpressed with the stick shift on the Mazda. It required a lot of force getting in and out of gears, it felt as if one was moving a lot of weight around, and the stick did not center very well on its own. Also the spring on the clutch was fairly stiff.

Trying to find out if it was just that test car... or is the stick shift on the heavy, clunky side in general? are there any fixes?

I find the shifter to be kinda volkswagenny in it's clunkyness, but I find the weight assuring. Certainly isn't a Honda shifter, but I don't find I have to force it in or out of any gears!

The clutch pedal is slightly heavier in effort than other cars, but not as heavy as aftermarket ones. The clutch in my friends 300zx TT is a freakin leg press.
