Computer geeks please

Hey there guys,

I was just wondering. In the past few weeks my room mate and I have noticed a huge amount of lag for our high speed internet connection. Sometimes it speeds up a little but then it goes right back down the the 56 Kbps performance. We have high speed through the cable.

We just have three computer tied into a 4 port hub.. It's been working fine for over a year like that. Now there is major major lag times.

I heard that people can easily hack into a computer that is tied into High speed through cable. I know of 1 person that was hosting a porn site without even knowing. Hence our local cable company tried to lower the bandwith a bit to prevent this but regardless it's still possible. Is there a way we can check our computers to see if any such sites or whatever exists on our PC. Like I can't tell the bits coming and out as it's by cable. Anyone have any ideas. I would hate like hell to be hosting porn and not even having access to the pics... ;) just kidding... I want my high speed connection back... please....

Thanks

Jc

i got this program called zonealarm(thanks dana)...it blocks attempts on your system

Jc,

that sounds like a problem with your cable operator's cable network. Either a) their network capacity is being overloaded, b) someone on their cable network is overusing the shared bandwidth that your neighborhood's cable modems all use, or c) a 'worm' is overloading the network.

the best thing you can do to protect yourself from unwanted hacks is to install Zone Alarm (freeware I believe) on EVERYONE'S machine. It does a very good job of keeping unwanted hacks out of your PC. Also make sure you have the latests updates on your anti-virus software.

If after you've done all that, the network still bogs down, it's most likely an issue that is beyond your control (aka cable network's overall bandwidth problem). This has been known to happen in cable modem networks, as all cable modems within a 'neighborhood' share 1 single bandwidth to the main backbone of the cable operator.

call your cable operator and see if you can find out more about this problem.

good luck :)

a router or a hub with a switch might help.

say one computer is on a peer-to-peer sharing program and multiple downloads and uploads are occurring, one computer is trying to load webpages and then the third is playing a game online. this would be killing ur bandwidth. even having gator or any file sharing program on will deplete ur bandwidth. i dunno when ur problem is exaclty ocurring but pay attention to the programs and tasks the computers are doing the next time your connection slows down.

Pick up a Linksys router ($99US) with a four port 10/100 switch to connect your four computers together. They also have an 8 port version and a mixed wired/wireless that works great.

Zonealarm is a must. Trust me you will be scared by the number of attempted hacks, port scans and general bulls*** being tried on your machine(s).

Download Adware from lavasoftusa.com. It checks and deletes any "spyware" programs that you may have lurking in your system that are sending info back to someone on where you go and what you do on the Internet for marketing purposes or worse.

Run the speed tests...and tweak the MTU to 1500 for a cable modem. email at rperry@comp-u-sultants.com if you need help with this or any of it.

So are your problems fixed now? Just about every reason people mentioned in here could very easily be a reason for lag. I guess a good analogy would be saying "my car won't start".

Also, another thing it could be is if you are running a file sharing program, and your uploads are running at the max upload speed...you'll lag big time since you won't be able to send back acknowledgement packets while downloading something.

Bondobob is sooo right there. I installed zonealarm, surfed the net, and have over 2000 attempted "peeks" into my computer before I got offline. It's truly amazing, and absolutely terrifying.
Terrrrrrifying.

Another thing is that cable modems are on a shared bandwidth with all other users in your area. I have noticed serious speed decreases over the last couple of years. (Yes, I've had it for quite a while) As more homes in the area get it, the speed seriously drops off.
I also had a small cut in one of my lines. Barely noticible, but I called and asked for a service check. The cable guy came out and found about a half inch slice from where something had barely sliced into the line in my backyard. Had to replace that section, and it's now about 3 times faster than it has ever been since I moved into the house a year ago.
Just a couple of thoughts.
As for firewalls, I've never run one at home, and never had any problems, yet. **crosses fingers**
I also don't have anything of major importance that isn't already backed up. If I have to, I reload. No big deal. I used to do it every other month or so just to keep on top of new stuff anyway.
Good luck!

talking about "Zonealarm" i just downloaded it seens fine , but today when i rebooted , folder "WIn32" opened .. Any of you guys have this problem and if so should i worry.
Thanxs

If you are running either windoze 2000 or win xp Pro, make sure Internet information server, or IIS is turned off.

If you run a form of unix or mac osX, turn off apache or eqivalent web server.
(stop httpd)

Check to see if you have the virus, scvhost.exe or winhlpp.exe. they propogate through network shares and waste bandwith.

Put up a cheep linksys firewall and make sure port 80 and 8080 are not being forwarded to any machines.

Lastly, if you run windoze, install zone alarm as many other peeps have said.

Do this and a lot, but not all your security problems will go away.

Moeed

make sure you don't have the welchia worm as well. It tries to auto download a patch from microsoft and really eats up bandwidth. If you have in all caps DLLHOSTS.EXE running your infected.

Running "winXP pro"

Well just scaned my PC with "eTrust EZ":
Finished scanning: 11:48:11 AM, 11/13/2003
Number of files scanned: 52924.
Number of files that could not be scanned: 68
No file viruses detected.

And it shows that has NO virus.(do u think that this anti-virus is not enough)
oh and i am not running DLLHOSTS.EXE but i am running "3" scvhost.exe NOT in caps... i mean nothing has gone wrong till now just the "Win32 folder poping up when i reboot"

get a spyware remover.. after i took all 354 spyware files.. uGh.. off my computer it nearly tripled my speed..
just a thought
