So far :
WD 80 Gig HD $50
ASUS A7N NFORCE2 MB $65
AMD 2600+ XP Barton $90
X-Dreamer case $56
Geil 512MB $78
Aero Cool X-Raider Fan $22
BFG FX5900XT OC $180

I went over my $500 budget by $41. I already have a 17" CRT, DVD/CD-RW drive, Altec surround sound speakers, keyboard/mouse and 1.44 floppy so I saved a little there. I still some odds and ends like cables but I think I should be good to go. I let everyone know how she turns out.

make sure you get 2 sticks of 256MB do you cal run dual channel on the motherboard. other than that it looks like a pretty good rig.

you're not gonna get a huge improvement running dual 256... there will be a slight one, but nothing huge. you're better off getting one 512 for now, and then when you have the funds, grabbing another 512 chip and running those dual.

What kind of comp are you trying to build? A computer for gaming or just surfing the internet and stuff?

Let me know your limit and I can get you a good idea on what to get.

I do need a good sound card mine is pretty out dated. I'm going with the 512 for now and soon I'll get another. I'm building it mostly for gaming. I need to keep the video card under $200. And which sound card is the best bang for the buck right now?

My 3 yr old has a better box than that (lol2) ...

My 16 has a PC like the one your building but I used an ABIT NF7-S ,a 2500+ Barton running 2.3gig or a little faster than a 3200+, 1gig of PC3200, a 9700Pro, an 80gig SATA, and an 18'' LCD with some large pimpin 70's style headphones. It runs most games fairly well. It does seem to help load times significantly in Farcry and DoomIII with 1 gig of RAM vs 512meg.

dude, don't worry about sound cards. most motherboards nowadays come with 6 channel audio standard. save your dough and buy more RAM.

512MB DDR PC-3200 $82
X-Dreamer Black Mid-Tower Case with 350W $56

Now it's all about the Video Card...what to buy...what to buy?

onboard AC97 sucks.. get a soundblaster audigy.. oh and as a bonus, they are designed and made about 30 minutes from where I live... I could go steal one for you :D

personally, I'd get an antec p160 over that case. Lots of people overlook getting a really good case. I think that's a shame. the 160 is all aluminum, so it's light but very strong. Cheaper shipping as well. And it has more quality in it then any other case in it's price range that I have seen. No pic can do it justice imho. The little touches that Antec has done to make this case different is crazy.

That's a nice setup but I went with something cheap for now...I'm trying to build a mid level gaming system. BTW how much?
