- 2003.5 Titanium Mazdaspeed
Here's a list of common acronyms if you're new to the boards.
GENERAL
FS: for sale
GB: group buy
GI: gauging interest
IMO: In My Opinion
IMHO: In My Humble Opinion
IIRC: If I Recall Correctly
LOL: Laughing out loud
LMAO: Laughing my ass off
MSP: Mazdaspeed Protege
ROFL: Rollin' on the floor laughing
RTM: Read The ******* Manual
STFU: Shut The **** Up
WTB: want to buy
WTF: What the f*ck
WTT: want to trade
YMMV: Your Mileage May Vary
AUTO RELATED
AWD: All Wheel Drive
AFR: Air Fuel Ratio
BHP: Brake horsepower
BOV: Blow off valve - Vents excess pressure to atmosphere that's created when under boost and the throttle is closed quickly.
BPV: Bypass valve - Same as above but vents back into intake pipe going to turbo.
BSFC: Brake Specific Fuel Consumption
CAI: Cold air intake - Intake pipe that puts air filter somewhere it can get fresh cool air rather than hot under-hood air. Typically big diameter and smooth bends to optimize flow.
CEL: check engine light
DOT: Department Of Transportation
DP: Downpipe - Essential part of any exhaust setup. Anyone want to write a 'technical' description?
EBC: Electronic boost controller - Electronic box that controls solenoid(s) to manipulate when the turbo wastegate opens. Typically lets you adjust boost in the car, causes the turbo to spool up quicker and controls boost spikes.
ECU: Engine Control Unit
EGT: Exhaust gas Temperature
EMS: Engine Management System
FCD: Fuel cut defenser - Product made by Joe P to stop the fuel cut at higher boost on a MSP
FI: Forced Induction
FMIC: Front mount intercooler - When air is compressed by a turbo it heats up. A FMIC is a large "radiator" that hot air passes through and is cooled down before going to the engine. Putting it out front gives it good air flow and lets it be bigger than in other locations.
FMU: Fuel Management Unit
FPR: Fuel pressure reducer - Product by Joe P to reduce the hesitation in MSPs by the over-rich mixture they run under boost. Causes the mixture to lean out a bit.
FPR: Fuel pressure regulator - What FPR is universally known as. Device that regulates the fuel pressure.
FWD: Front Wheel Drive
HID: high intensity discharge headlights
IAT: intake air temperature
JDM: Japanese Domestic Market. Ie, Not for export from Japan
LSD: Limited Slip Differential
MAF: Mass Air Flow
MAP: Mass Air Pressure
MBC: Manual boost controller - Simple, inexpensive device (Joe P also makes one of these) that lets you increase the boost on a turbo car and make the turbo spool faster. Much cheaper than an EBC but not adjustable in the car and not as good at controlling spike.
MIL: Malfunction Indicator Light
N/A: Naturally(Normally) Aspirated - Traditional engine without turbo/supercharger. Intakes air the natural way instead of being force fed.
OEM: Original Equipment Manufacturer
PCM: Powertrain Control Module
PSI: Pounds/Square Inch - American measurement for pressure such as that found in vacuum lines. Popular on boost, fuel, oil pressure gauges.
RH: Racing Hart
RWD: Rear Wheel Drive
SMIC: Side mount intercooler - When air is compressed by a turbo it heats up. A SMIC is a smaller "radiator" that hot air passes through and is cooled down before going to the engine. SMICs are generally smaller and are somewhat blocked by the body so most choose to go with a FMIC. Stock on the Mazdaspeed Protege.
SRI: Short ram intake - Short, Large diameter pipe with smooth bends that puts the air filter in a convienient location close to the turbo. Thought to give better flow than a CAI. SRI + FMIC is assumed to flow better then CAI + FMIC. Use the search button to see endless debate whether CAI alone is better than SRI.
TB: Throttle Body
TMIC: Top Mount Intercooler
TPS: Throttle Position Sensor - Tells the ECU how far the gas pedal is depressed.
TT: Turbo Timer - Electronic box that will keep the engine on a turbo car running for a calculated length of time after the key is turned off to let the turbo cool after recently running under boost.
UDP: Under Drive Pulley
VCTS: Variable Tumble Control System, emmisions device on the intake manifold by the head
VICS: Variable Intake Charge System, Valves in the IM (intake manifold) that open to allow a larger plenum.
WB: Wideband Oxygen sensor - Shows air fuel ratio being run at any given time and helps in tuning.
WHP: wheel horse power
WG: Wastegate
WOT: Wide Open Throttle - If you need an explanation, you're a member of the wrong forum.
