2008.5 Mazdaspeed3 TRURED
I just installed (with experianced techy) a Cobb SRI on my speed3. Followed exact instructions, double checked everything, cleaned up engine bay and took off. Only did a 3 mile cirlcle around the neighborhood, desert road around 80 mph. Brought her up the driveway and a terrible burnt odor is emitting from the engine bay with no smoke. The odor almost smells "electrical". Scratching my head. Any ideas? Thanks in advance and I couldnt find anything regarding this on 20 minutes of SEARCH. Thanks again!

perhaps its just the smell of the new part from heating up?

Thats the only thing I can think of. The engine bay has no left over tools in it; it runs very well, and I just cant seem to pinpoint it. One hour now after running it, and it still has very strong odor. Thanks for your reply and I'll be standing by for more replys. Thanks again!

the burnt odor shouldn't be there...is it coming from a specific area of the engine bay or just in general?

i did not experience any kind of burning smell when i installed my cobb sri...all my mods came with no burnt odor...and i am fully bolted expect headers...the only mod that had burnt odor is the cp-e downpipe but that is because of the penetrating lubricant we used to remove the DP

Thanks for reply....it was coming out in general. The tech who installed it in my garage for a few beers says it is the new plastic also, but it was STRONG!. Ive installed SRI's in my Mitsu's and Toyos' but this was different....

Could it be the oil in the filter warming up for the first time? Or did it come with a dry filter?
That is a great possibilty. The filter came dry. Actually my tech told me they come "pre-oiled" as my other K&N intakes do, but this one felt dry. Im taking her out later today. (RAIN) right now. Thanks for reply!

Well I just took it out and took the same route (about three miles) and came back into the garage. It drove well, and the odor is still there but very minimal. Very faint. I going to leave with the conclusion that the heat on the new rubber is doing this. The car barely has 2000 miles on it. Yes only Two Thousand Miles. Tomorrow morning will be my first trip to the base which is 22 miles from here. We will see how it reacts then. Thanks again for the replys.

Maybe it was the clutch from ripping on the car to feel the new powah?! The other thing I'd check that is a common problem is there is a small coolant line attached to the block with a pinch clamp right next to where the hose clamp sits for the intake to inlet connection. The position of this pinch clamp can get in the way of the intake/inlet clamp and if you end up twisting it can cut the coolant line. Check to see if there is any coolant in this area or leaked down on top of the tranny under where your SRI sits.

Thank you Sir! Will check when I get home this evening. She's sitting in the garage as we speak. THANKYOU for your reply!

FWIW, I don't believe mine did that. The SRI's been on for several months, and I could've forgotten, but I doubt it. Does it smell like coolant, or hot oil? There are no electronics in the SRI. Wonder if it's that silver box (technical term) under the SRI that says "HOT -- DO NOT TOUCH". Could something have come in contact with that.

Possibility! I will check that also tonight when I get home. (((Plus Im just finding out that the Cobb SRI is not California legal))). I always do my homework prior to purchase and I missed this one! Yeah let me check this evening. Thanks a mil for your reply!

I checked all reply's and followed up with checking my tru-red baby out. nada. Have no idea. The odor is completely gone, so it prob was the clutch when I took off on her maiden voyage. I mean I let her rip! So now theres a total of 6 miles on my new Cobb SRI. Im not driving her tomorrow or the next day due to needing the other car for the job. NOW that I find out it's not CALIFORNIA CARB compatible... I may just pull it out and sell it. Im on the fence here on this one! Thanks all for your replys!!!!

Final Answer: It HAS to be the clutch. When I was initially ripping up the street; I shifted to fast for my foot. Case closed.

^^ yeah I wouldn't sweat it... the clutch probably needed some proper break in :)

I know sometimes mine stinks a bit after hard driving but it still holds great and I'm at 14k miles now.

My guess would be the clutch with your car having so few miles on it. Mine smelled like fried socks for a long time when I first got it! The intake should not be causing this smell.

Thanks... I took her into MAZDA and they concluded with, "The smell/odor is from your clutch". Mannn I must of let her rip huh???? Thanks all and ZOOM-ZOOM safely!(nana)
