Cobb AP vs. CP-e Standback

So I was waiting for a long time to get the AP but now found out that it might be possible to get even better results with the cpe (which I havent heard much of honestly) and that it, too, comes with "pre-loaded" maps. The price difference is only $50 new. Anyone tried both and decided to go with one over the other? Any known issues with the cpe? Let me hear your inputs!
 
depends on your goals. If you have basic bolt ons and want an easy tune for some additional power then get the AP, it's pretty capable and works well for what it is. Just know that cobb has basically said **** you to the mazda community and has no plans to continue development and making better software/capabilities. If you plan on making big numbers or going big turbo one day, or just want something thats simple to use, your only option is to get the SB. The SB along with the flashes is the only tuning solution proven to work and make correct power levels for a properly sized turbo and boost level on that turbo. I will also add that tuning with a SB is much more easy than tuning an AP. On my SB I can tune my car in 3 pulls from scratch. That just doesnt happen on the AP, I dont care who the tuner is. CPe is the only company that has been dedicated to the mazda community and continued to make products/breakthroughs for us even after the community flamed them over s*** in the past. They will help you etune your car if you get one and want some starting points/help.

COBB Tuning has not left the Mazda Community and we are currently working on new developments for the MS3/6 AccessPORT. We are also currently developing an AccessPORT for the 2010 Mazdaspeed3.

The difference between the two is that the AccessPORT has DIRECT control over the factory ECU. For ease of tuning, the AccessPORT comes pre-loaded with calibrations for most popular modifications with more available for download on our website. This is the first I have heard of your E-tuning option. Does the process include data logging after the initial tune so that the follow up tunes are more precise? I would be very interested in this for my 8 (I know this is the wrong section). The options that are out there currently are not great, and most tuners are not good with the RX8, and I have heard nothing but good things (from other 8 owners) about Surgeline, and unlike most other tuners they already have experience with tuning the 8. If they were closer to me I would already have gotten a tune from them. This would be a great opportunity, and I would jump on it for sure.
 
Yes, each E-tune gives you two revisions with your datalog feedback. Follow the link and the process is explained and pricing and applications are included too.
 
im not gonna start a s*** slinging fest here,...lol. yes cobb, you have left the MS platform. You gave us the big f-you, You discontinued parts, and at one point even left the community ( there was a childish post by gary or whoever) because you got flamed hard over on M S F, and then came back not long after with an apology. Any new developments you are making are just to keep your sales up since the SB actually made some advancements and now people are once again looking at getting a SB instead of the god-sent AP.
Ok so you have direct control over the factory ecu...and??? what has that gotten you? I havent seen one dyno from an AP car thats running a BT and a PROPER boost level for that turbo while making good #'s. not some RR s*** with a t67 turbo at low 400's.
For ease of tuning, the AP comes preloaded with calibrations....this car doesnt respond well to over the shelf maps and we all know it. Laloosh knew it years and years ago when everyone said he was a dick... he was right. every person who is really modded has to get in ATR and make their own s*** or make changes to your maps- Just like kevin(haltech) did with your original maps to actually make them worthwhile to run... COBB, you guys came in, made some $$ then left. you havent continued to make any parts for our cars nor have you supported the community unconditionally like CPE has over the years. Not even close. They have showed unconditional support to us even at times when everyone flamed them and said they were full of s***, then they came through and put their money where their mouth is... /rant

Not sure what your agenda is in this thread is but knock it off. You can't start by saying "I'm not gonna start a s*** slinging fest here" and then start to throw crap. I just had to teach my 12 year old this lesson the other day. If you have a specific complaint for Cobb, send them a PM and I'm sure they will address it.

Not sure what you are expecting the Cobb to do, but an AP needs to be tuned properly to get optimal results. Much like a SB. Do you expect Cobb to make a magic wand to wave over your engine bay that make max power automatically?

I do have a question for you. How do you go about passing OBDII emissions testing with a Stand Back?

This is our lineup of MS3 products that we currently offer. Last year we were forced to remove some products and hard parts from our lineup accross all product lines, not just the MS3, due to circumstances that were beyond our control. We will be continuing to offer hard parts as well as the AccessPORT for forseeable future. Additional parts for the Mazdaspeed 3 will become available as we bring the new Manufacturing Center in Austin, TX up to speed.

put the tables all to zero and go smog it. Matter of fact you dont even make closed loop changes anyways since the car would trim them out, so when its doing the rollers 10mph or 15mph whatever, its on the stock map and passes as long as your engine is running properly and theres not other mods stopping you from passing.
SB doesnt go through the OBD2 port and isnt flashed into the ecu, it's transparent to the car. So if your not hitting open loop or higher load values the car never "see's" the changes from the SB and continues to run the stock map. Visual inspection could be passed if the SB and wires are hidden well.
 
Cool, so plugging into the OBDII port would not reveal anything, and the readiness monitors would all be set. Most of the OBDII tests just check for the readiness monitors and make sure there are no CEL's active. The complication for me was that I am running a catless midpipe. However the AP allowed me to pass without swaping the OEM cat back onto the car. It can defeat CEL's, but the rediness monitors are still active. Its voodoo as far as I can tell. Good tuners can do it.

i preferred the sb due to its ease of use.
when i had ap, i never dove into atr cause it looked confusing as hell.
 
OMG Bykeryder. Its Fail Wheel Drive! Your never gonna put power down. So anything over 280wtq is a waste. Dont forget 18psiwhitems3 was makin close to 360/380 tuned on the AP with the K04-SST. Power is irrelevant unless you take care of 2 factors first. 1.Grip 2. the nut behind the wheel. If you have beef with a vendor, take it to PM. s*** gets annoying.

Not everyone has the same feelings as you do. Not everyone likes cobb or cpe. People have their prefs. I for one like Cobb for their parts that work, but i also like CPE cuz they are makin break thrus for the platform. One shouldnt flame one or the other cuz, in the end, we still all own failboats and we will remain as a big family of failboat captins.
 
personally i think the attacks on cobb are way outta line and uncalled for. if your hurt they dont make a part you want or hurt the ap didnt work for you then let it go and get something else. but seeing as to how all the cobb stuff i have seen/owned is quality i cant complain. only thing i can remotely say is the broken bracket, but mine never did so no harm no foul. I just bought my 3rd ap (sold others to pay bills nothing bad) and a cobb rsb i am still a huge cobb fan. there support of my products has been outstanding, from replacing a faulty maf housing, to a fault ap button (mind you the ap in question was bought used and they did it free). I have no problems with cobb and as i buy other cars or parts in the future they will be one of the first companies i look to.

umm, the second cat isnt monitored by an o2 sensor so there wouldnt be any info in the cars ecu about it not being there. you dont need a "good tuner" to pass without it. depends on your state and how they smog check cars though...cali you'd fail regardless for that i dont care who tuned the car.

yes, win and epic. I been around the community a while a seen it all multiple times over. No b/s here. I have done plenty to my car and watched others do s*** too, even seen/ talked to kevin(haltech, lives right by me) who tested a bunch of cobb parts including coilovers (???where are they now cobb?) on his car and helped them with the original maps that were junk.

ok, so your saying FWD cant put down power? you then even say it yourself that with "grip" as in a good wheel/tire/susp setup and a good driver you CAN put it down. there are plenty of fast ass fwd cars that put it down on the streets and in the 1/4. that statement makes you look like a jackass.

OP to awnser your original question go get an AP man. They work fine I have nothing against them, just putting the facts out there about whats what. If you want an easy over the shelf map run an AP and call it a day. If you wanna get a very user friendly tune device, make big power in the future, or have room to grow get a SB. either way they will both work.
