Cobb AP Discussion Thread

Lots of great info here guys. I just read thru this whole thread a few hours each night for 2 days, and I printed out all the .pdf's on the cobb site and gotta read thru all that info. But I have 3 fairly easy questions for you guys..

1. After I load the AP and save the stock map, can I use the AP to monitor and log the stock tune before doing anything else? (just to see how the car is performing, i.e. kr, boost, afr, etc. before a map change)

2. I plan on staying stock on performance mods until my factory warranty is up, so if I run the OTS stage1 93oct map, will the improvements be worth the retail price?

3. I've read conflicting mpg observations from person to person (probably do to upgrades, etc.) but I drive mostly highway and average somewhere between 23-25mpg. Will my overall mpg's increase along with performance running a stage1 93oct map?

Thanks guys, and all this info has been great.

Anyone got some info?

I haven't installed my AP yet, but from reading up on it you load up their stock map (be sure to save the map from the car) and can use it just like any other map. I'm planning what you suggest, just running the stock map for a while before I try any OTS maps to have something to compare to. According to the Cobb documentation, you get something like a 10% increase in torque and HP from using just a stage 1 map with the stock engine; I don't know about the 93 map because we only have 91 gas out here.

I read thru the initial install procedure, and it seems the only thing you can do is save your stock map, and run a new map (whether a stage map or their stock map). I guess I was hoping to datalog as the car sits right now, without reseting the ecu, so I know exactly what my ltft / stft, etc look like since my ecu hasn't been reset for a while. Then when I did run a stage map I'd have info to compare. But if thats not possible, I'll just have to run different maps, let the ecu learn, and compare from there.

As far as power increase goes, I guess if I remain stock, and cobbs estimates and dyno figures are even close, the price is worth it. So that question is answered.

MPG's is still a question...what kind of numbers you guys getting that run stage 1 maps on a stock or close to stock car??

On the highway, excellent (highest mileage ever for me . . . but ya gotta resist going to the "floor" very often).
In the city, I'm not sure if its improved, as a matter of fact (SOP) it may have even gone down, and that's only because its so easy to use the pedal rather aggressively in the city . . . with this car its hard not to . . . you know, just for the sake of fun.

When you save YOUR stock map via the option upon AP installation, you can load it back into the ECU and run stock to record whatever data you want and then flash another map or make you own changes to any map and flash that to the ECU. It is incredibly easy to tune via the AP/ATR.

Forzda, thats good info... I was under the impression that I could only reload my stock map when uninstalling the AP. But now it makes sense that my stock map would be listed as another choice in the map list. Thanks for the responses guys.

ok im still having the running to lean on bank 1 sensor...and it only happens when i flash a map with the ap...idk i dont feel or see any boost leaks(Im hitting boost where its suppose to be) and idk what eles to do...should i take everything off ets tmic and re tightin everything?

Check everything for tightness. Did you try calibrating your maf?

Also, you have the right ap (as in Cali vs federal)?

i would think so ..where do i check for that? i got mine new

I recommend you take the TXS hybrid BOV off and install the OEM BPV. The lean code means your LTFT is too high (+) for too long mainly at idle. I've seen the TXS hybrid BOV incorrectly setup and sitting there with the hybrid BOV port open at idle and letting unmeasured air, bugs, animals, and other crap into the intake manifold. The ECU sees the lean mixture, adds extra fuel to help burn up the roaches and tells you that you screwed up.....

The Cobb map(s) are very clear in what mods it will support and the TXS hybrid isn't one of them. Get it off the car.....

Oh, and the MSCAI is known to run higher (+) Long Term fuel trims anyway.

Anyone else get frequent P2187 (too lean) with the AP?? Im running the 93 FUCAI TMIC stage 1. Getting custom tuned but just wondering if anyone else has this prob. Mine comes on and off. I guess when I drive normally and avoid boost it resets in a couple days. But when I do some pulls it usually comes on again.

If you are getting a lean code when you go into boost, you have a intake/boost/vacuum leak somewhere. I would start looking at the turbo inlet as a culprit.

Got my AP!!

I am going to install tonight I was wondering peoples thoughts on using a battery booster such as this
http://reviews.canadiantire.ca/9045/0111823P/reviews.htm
to ensure I do not loose a charge...

It is cold out and I don't wanna fry the ecu...

What are peoples thoughts on using something like this to keep the battery charged? Will this even do it? I don't wanna short the car out.

Or should I be fine without it?

Yeah im getting boost creep / KR pretty consistantly too. It happens around 5300 rpms right in the peak of the powerband. Pretty dangerous.

Everything seems to be tight but maybe my inlet clamp isn't tight enough on the turbo side . . . I don't see how that would lead to higher boost though. Either that or my fuel pump is crapping out causing me to run lean. That doesn't seem likely with my mods though.

If you can, take a datalog and throw it up here for people to look at. Describing the problem is a start, but without some data to try and diagnose, it's much more difficult.

coyfish im getting that code all i have is a mscai, ets tmic, and turbo xs hybrid bov...everytime i flash a map unless its a stock map it does it

I would look at your Fuel Pressure, we have seen the pumps go bad on stock cars with a tune (stage 1). Stumbling, lean etc are all symptoms of a bad pump.

I wouldn't worry about it, I installed mine when it was at least 20 below (celcius) . . . I don't plug my car in (no block heater), and my car starts just fine at 30 below.

If your battery is strong, no worries . . . if you have trouble starting your car in sub-zero temps, maybe you should consider it.

Anyone know what important calibrations you can't alter when comparing the AP self tune vs the pro tuning software??

Here in Orlando there is no company that has the AP software to PRO tune mazdaspeed 3 / 6's. They can use the self tuning software though.

I know with the self tuning software you can change basics like A/F, ignition, boost, rev limits . . . Is there anything important that you CAN'T alter ??

Slowboyracing.com just moved in your area recently I believe. Debary isn't too far from orlando, i can't see them not being able to protune...

I have a noob question, I just got my AP about a week ago and other then having phantom KR in every map i've used is there a trick to datalogging? everytime I try to datalog it says to click ok to start, then I do that and it asks me what I want to look at and I hit knock retard, and it always says it is not logging. how the hell do I log?
