Clutch or Tranny?

Tonight I did a stupid thing... While showing my boss and some other peoople I work with my car, I dropped the clutch at about 4K.. All it did was spin and make noise, then the same thing in second... I never connected at all. Now, I know my tires weren't spinning the whole time, it was more like all the power was stuck at the axel and wasn't proportionately being distributed- hence the need for LSD...

Now my questuion is this. I smelt a fairly bad burnt clutch smell after this poor display of showboating. Is this purly a clutch issue, a tranny issue, lack of LSD issue, or a little of both?

Nonetheless- I don't plan on oing it again.. Conservative starts from now on.

sounds like you heated the clutch up pretty good, hence the smell. your stock clutch disc is made of a fiber material that slips and burns when severly heated, which probably explains the car riding the rev limiter through first and second.

if you are going to do that, just dump the clutch, don't ride it at all. i doubt the trans would sustain damage from that

Yessir, clutch smell-o-rama... I'm thinking once I get the ACT in there it will respond much better. Although I have heard that the ACT clutches are known for eating up stock trannings since that are sprung so hard.

From what I know there isn't a different tranny out there for our cars. The only mod I was planning on doing is adding an LSD. The Quaiffe one is over a grand, but there's word going around that there's one going to be available fairly soon for under $500. Plus the one from the MS protege, but I'm not sure how much that will cost.

thanks for the reply!

no problem ;)

btw, the upgraded clutch (ACT) shouldn't have any effect on the transmission, other than being able to hold more power and upping the anti as far as being the "fuse" in the drivetrain. the increased pressure of the pressure plate will add more stress on the flywheel and foward (rotational assembly) not the trans and rearward.

obviously if the car is making more power, and the clutch holds it, and the trans breaks something internally, then there is a problem. but that isn't because of the ACT clutch (even though the clutch might be a bit more grabby and shocking to the trans and the way it engages), but actually because the trans cannot handle XXX amount of fwtq. i don't think you'll have that problem with a small turbo/moderate boost setup.

smp I think you r thinking of the guy who put a 6 puck ACt in the car and popped his tranny. I believe it was the fact that it was way to much clutch for the tranny to handle. IS300 and others can probably lend alot more into this then I though.

Funny thing is I did the same with my ACT clutch last week. I smelt that burnt smell also, and I hit the limiter.

1st MP3 in NH is correct. The 4 and 6 puck clutches on our trannies provide to much clamping pressure resulting in drivetrain shock. I spoke to ACT on the phone and they advised me that you want to get the least amount of clutch for your car (stay with in reasonable hp to what the clutch was designed for opposed to getting the highest clamping hp clutch). To many enthusiasts want the biggest baddest multi puck clutch because it holds 400 whp. But we will never see this. The gorrilla style clutch that has excessive clamping force puts to much stress on the tranny and they also chatter. I have the street disk ACT and that thing feels like a stock clutch. Awesome and wont kill our tranny. There have been a few guys on here that have phucked there tranny's using the multi puck clutches.
When I was young and dumb (I am still dumb:p ) I had a 6 puck(broward clutch) on my second miata and completly destroyed the tranny. Also 1st gear take off's were a b****, excessive clutch chatter and every shift felt like I was power shifting. It was cool at first but it got old real fast.

I concur! The ACT Street clutch feels stock. The only difference is the additional force you have to put on the clutch pedal!

Is there another brand that sells a clutch for our cars? I heard clutchmasters make great products, but didn't see the protege in the list of available clutch systems.

here is the clutch i have (i don't think they make it for the mp3 yet, but you could always be part of the R&D for it)

http://www.turboclutch.com/web-Supra.htm

its pretty awesome, pedal pressure is like stock, the way it engages is like a fiber based clutch, as the carbon material slips for a second (when i say second, i actually mean about a tenth of a second) until it heats up and grabs and holds. the more you slip it and heat it, the better it grabs

its a bit pricey, but check out the amount of torque it is rated at!
