Clutch Brand

I'm not planning any power upgrades, so, from what you all point out, Mazda stock, Speed, Exedy stock, will probably be fine.
For stop-n-go traffic, I don't want anything stiffer than the original.
I also don't want a limp pedal like I had in past Civic.

Poison, what you have works great but, not exedy? Any guess what you have?

CheeseHelmet, what brand stock do you have?, Mazda, Exedy, or other?

meGrimlock, thought I read somewhere that 2003 P5 & Speed had similar suspension & drivetrane. Are they identical or just close?

Maxx, if you mean Mazda is a waste of $$ vs aftermarket, that's part of what I'm trying to figure.

Boostr, some discrepency as to whether slave is internal & part of kit, or seperate, but I'm sure I need new.

Oh yah, are Daikin & Exedy the same brand?

Thanks guys, any more input is absolutely appreciated.

This is what you need...hands down...no other questions needed...

I got the Exedy OEM replacement (it's the same brand that Mazda uses). The clutch disk looked different compared to the stock one (pic), but the feel is pretty much the same. I got the entire kit (clutch disk, pressure plate, release bearing, pilot bearing, alignment tool, and lube) for a little over $80 on amazon. The kit's part number is KMZ08.

the protege5 and ES sedan have similair suspension set up. the msp has the upgraded racing beat-tuned suspension (but parts not supplied by racing beat) along with a limited slip diff.

the drivetrain is also nearly identical with all three. the msp clutch cover has slightly higher set load.

the master or slave cylinders are not integrated into any other components, they can be replaced separately. you can buy rebuilt kits but considering they are $15-$25 and a new part cost around $30-$45 its really up to you to use them or buy new.

Stickman, I honestly have no clue what the shop stuck in here. It was oem replacement, but definitely not Mazda branded oem. My oem clutch waas stiff as hell, like a real b****, and I had shudder for the first few minutes of driving, until it warmed up. This thing is smoooove, obviously engagement is way better, and the pedal feel is now 'sporty' firm, not leg press hard.

If you want, I can call and ask what brand it was.

Poison,
If you wouldn't mind calling, that would be great, no big deal.
Your pedal now is sporty firm; harder, softer, or same as before replacement?

CheeseHelmet,
Thanks for the info, that clears up a lot.

Sidenote,
Clutch was slipping the other day, and now it's not.
I wonder if I'm dealing w/ master & slave cylinder issues instead of clutch itself?

Thanks guys.

btw, LUK is probably the oem replacement brand you were quoted, its a german mfg. if that makes you feel any better.

check your motor mounts, and you can replace/rebuild the slave cylinder first since its cheap and you don't have to take apart the transmission. just get some brake fluid to bleed the system and if you still experience slippage then it is probably internal.

Is LUK any good, has anyone used it?

Mounts are bad but waiting for clutch replacement to get at them. Have them nylon zip tied right now.

Good to know that slave cylinder is extenal and accessable. 5 dealers in the area but none were sure!?! Probably makes sense to try that 1st.

Thanks

I have no idea, the auto parts place near my house seems to prefer them over Exedy but they never really gave me a straight answer as to why. I'd go with whatever is cheaper.

Whatever you do, do not use an AWR rear mount. It makes the car so annoying to drive in stop and go traffic. Their front mount and side inserts are nice if you want a little more responsiveness from the gas pedal. I'd go with OEM mounts if I did it again.

That's really scary that none of the dealers in your area knew such a simple fact :S
