Clunking sound

Hey guys, my ms3 is now 500 miles old (yey) but I'm noticing some clunking sound when I'm rolling on 1st gear and on reverse. What do you think it is?

Thanks in advance

In most of our experiences its either A) the brakes being new and possibly
B) the LSD clunking its little heart out. Either way it goes away eventually even if it is annoying and sounds horrible.

GO GET YOUR RECALL DONE!!!!!

Ah, now that that is handled... Mine made clunking noises before my engine fell out. You'd s*** yourself if you watched the engine move while underway, I've been told by a Mazda engineer that the NVH tests showed they could use a very soft engine mounting setup, but it scares me. Anyway, most of the problem comes from the loose bolt everyone's had problems with. It also wheel-hopped like a bucking bronco, and gave me one hell of a scare during a sanctioned drag race. AFTER the engine was fixed, and the bolt replaced, the car was much more stable under these launch conditions.

There is always one noise you'll hear, especially with the windows down; it will sound a lot like a rifle chambering, it is the counter weight of the transmission mechanism banging around, I think. You'll hear this when shifting, most commonly.

then don't sweat and just drive. IF it fails or breaks then warranty it, get your rental car and dog the s*** out of the rental. :D cheers

This is true except for the fact that if the thing goes and breaks at higher speeds...He could wreck and be seriously injured or killed. So, its not a laughing matter IMO.

Typically what you are hearing is the motor shifting on its mounts. You'd literally s*** yourself if you took your hood off and watched the engine as it went about its range of motion. A Mazda engineer told me they cringed when they first saw it in action, but realized it was safe (except for the bolt boo-boo!)

4thmeal............. What was the highest speed ANYONE got up to when the mount failed??? i know i didn't lose steering or brakes when the mount failed, SO how in the **** can you crash the car. Now maybe if someone over reacts and OVER corrects for somehting that isn't affecting the stability of the car, then yea maybe a crash, but at 45-50 mph when mine failed it was justa bunch of hidious noises and me with a big ******* smile on my face (i jinks myself lol )

Get a second opinon from another dealer, if they find nothing then maybe your just hearing things. Be sure to ride with the service manager and let them hear the clunk that your hear. Don't stop driving till it happens.

untiel then, have fun :D

Short answer is I was at 35mph, and my car drove itself hard right, almost into the curb. The left axle fell out, and banged around. It could have easily got caught and jammed in, amongst other things. Don't kid yourself, when something as big as an engine falls out, at speeds around 50-60, I could easily see it being a deadly issue. Not to mention one hell of an inconvenience.

When my engine fell out I was going about 40 and it jerked the wheel but not bad. It just made a lot of noise.

FYI for those wondering. IT IS PHYSICALLY IMPOSIBLE FOR THE MOTOR TO FALL ALL THE WAY OUT. Thats because there is a subframe under the motor. I agree it makes a hell of a noise but i experienced not loss of control, yes my axle broke also, but once its broke its out of the way. either way we got the recall and its over with.

I agree it shouldn't fall all the way out, the cross member did a good job of catching my engine...

I don't see how the engine could fall all the way out. It sucked but they fixed it with a good turn around time and I'm happy now that I have my car back. Now it's time to mod it.(laugh)
