Clunk in rear of car...

Seriously? That's just the top of the piston rod. Is there not a hole in the body @ that location? What is there, just a hump that it protrudes into?

Yes, there is a hole it goes into... which if the mount is placed slightly off will bump into side of the hole. Sorry I don't have another pic to go with this...

Thanks. Good information and good troubleshooting. I will keep this in mind when its time
for me to replace the shocks.

Very good info. Sorry for the late post, but yes my noise was coming from the mag lite :). Secured it down and haven't heard the noise again. The thread I read about the coil spring bowls was in this forum. Let me chase it down really quick.

OK, so I read it in this thread about half way down. A post from SonicBoy. Not very helpful. It would be great if anyone knew if this was a TSB and could get the number.

I will definitely check out the area around the shock shaft when I replace mine for any wear where the shaft might be hitting.

Never know though. So far I've only had the Cinco for a few weeks but love it. Just took the fam to Sacramento for Thanksgiving. 1000 mile round trip with 2 young kids and all their gear. Got 28 + mpg and discovered I love driving this thing. Looking forward to sending my kids off to college in it.

My 5 clunked in the back until they replaced the sway bar end links. quiet after that. the mechanic at the local dealership is good for oil, and tire swaps thats it. I went to another dealership around 1hr away and they found the problem right away...

RE: Clunking, we purchased new in November 2007. First rear Passenger Side shock was replaced @ just 13987KM as it had leaked out completely. You had yours checked, but I would keep an eye on it as we've had 2 replaced under warranty and I'm going to do the 3rd one this weekend after a visit to the dealer today for servicing (KYBs this time). Only 67800KMs on the car and the left one has never needed replacement.

cheval1, that is pathetic how many shocks a car with 68,000 km has gone through. I'd be writing a letter to Mazda.

I have heard the rear sway bar bushings squeak and clunk since my '09 was new. This car has all of the revised parts so I wrote it off as normal. I actually took the rear bushings off and lubed them. It got a little bit better, but still didn't fix it. The fact that lubing the bushings changed it tells me that it's the bushings. At some point Mazda revised the bushings so that they have a sort of diamond looking tread on the inside. They did so because the bushings were perfectly matched with the metal surface and "popping" when the sway bar flexed. They still do it. It's normal and I wouldn't worry at all unless you hear metal-on-metal. The alternative is to remove the sway bar and significantly reduce your handling, or be a sport, and invent a ball bearing bushing design that we can all use to fix ours, too. :)
