call me crazy but with the crap paint that mazda put on our cars...i was worried about that when mine started to flake a little so i just had the bumper completely repainted so it was thicker and now i dont have any problems :D

well lets say u dont have a couple hundred dollars to throw around towards new paint lol what would be a good alternate solution?

well, if you don't have the money to get it sanded down and re-cleared, you can try this.

1. Make sure you get off the excess that is peeling up around the spots that have already been chipped.
2. Sand the edges with about 800 grit wet paper. DO NOT SAND THE COLOR!!!
3. Go to Advance Auto Parts or Autozone and get some Duplicolor High Gloss Clear Coat finish or something like that. Not the high temp stuff. Just the regular High Gloss.
4. spray those areas a little closer and pull back before stopping.
5. Wait at least 24 hours.
6. Hit it with some 2000 grit sand paper. Let it soak in some water for at least 20 minutes and make sure to run water over while your sanding.
7. Buff the s*** out of the entire bumper with some buffing compound.

That's about all you can do without having it re-cleared. Problem you are going to have after doing this is the orange peel not matching the factory, so that might make it a little noticeable.

I was also going to suggest getting to know your local painter and see what kind of deal you could get if you already have it off the car, prepped, and take it it when they are clearing another car in the booth.

It's not as easy to paint (clear) a car as some might think. The orange peel would likely be horrendous.

I say stop following so close, and have the bumper repainted by someone who knows what they're doing.

If he was good at it already, he probably wouldn't have asked for opinions...he'd just do it himself without asking.

so true man, whenever i tell people i fix and paint cars they think everything is soo easy to paint. I'm like, well why don't you do it yourself then, hahah! i would recommend having a body shop look at it . if your ever in delray skinnyjoint i'll help you out bro

eh i think its all in the prep work because once you have the paint technique down its easy to spray. atleast thats what i think.

painting is fairly easy once you get good technique down and after a year and a half of experience i can proudly say i have become a good painter but, i have i seen a fair share of really crappy painters. I hate having to fix someone elses bad work ya know.
dominoy2k1 do you do paint work, if so I could use all the help and advice you have thanks man?

dont do much painting anymore mostly bodywork. been doing it for about 4 1/2yrs not long but i work with alot of old guys that been doing it for awhile. i learn alot from them.
