Clear Bra (info, inc)

Ok, so I've been learning a lot about paint protection films, clear bras, lately and thought I'd share what I've learned and hopefully get some extra information.

There are a variety of different options out there, in films and in process. StonGard, Xpel, Rockblocker and Llumar. From what I can deduce StonGard, Xpel and RockBlocker are semi-transparent and are 3M product/s, Llumar uses it's own new transparent product. The 3M products have been around a while, with the Llumar product being one of the newer ones on the market.

Web propaganda says that the semi-transparent products don't yellow with age. I've talked to one local dealer, Llumar dealer, who says that the semi-transparent's yellow with age. (grain of salt) Llumar hasn't been around longer then 3 years, but supposedly doesn't fade to yellow or cloud.

There are a number of different web sites that offer Paint Protection Film kits for the Mazda3, currently. Full (hood, lights, mirrors and bumpers) as well as partial (any combination of the full) are also available. These range from $250 - $750 for the full kits of the 3M based products. I haven't found a place to buy Llumar PPF pre-cut kits yet. I don't have them linked, but could if folks really want them. What I have deduced is that the application of clear bra's can be tricky and the Mazda3 is average -> above average in detail and level of complexity (stretching and corners).

Conclusion: If you've never worked with and/or don't feel comfortable working with vinyl, it's worth it to pay someone to do it for you.

Questions I have about Clear Bra's:

#1 With washing somewhat regularly (summer once every 1-2 weeks, winter once every 2-4 weeks) and waxing (summer once a month, winter once every 1-2 months), how well will the clear bra's last? Peeling? Yellowing (I've got a white 3, so if it goes yellow it will really show)?

#2 Anyone know of folks in the Seattle area that do them? Frank's Window Tinting did an awesome job on my window tints, but their quote of $900 is a little high for me right now.

#1. I have clearshield. It guarantees not to crack, peel or bubble, discolor or turn yellow, will stay put, will remain optically clear. I thought Stonguard had similar warranty, I forget about the details of the others.

#2 Seattle, no. I talked to lots of installers around Portland that I can pass on info for if you want to drive a few hours. Probably not worth it cause if you're unlucky you could get chips on the drive down. $900 seems high though. Depends on the package and product of course. I got full bumper (around into the side too of course), partial hood, behind and in front of wheel wells (actually front already covered by bumper piece), 5 door jams, mirrors, top of rear bumper. This package was $550. Plus if you get they have a deal to tint the windows for a hundred more so that's what I did (other window quotes were 200-250).

Oh one more place they did was the insides and outsides of the door handles. So far I'm pleased with it all. Only time will tell though if it was all worth it though.

The $900 is for the lights, hood, left/right side by hood, bumper and mirrors. The guy doesn't have a plotter or "kit" so everything would be cut by hand, thus his reasoning for the price. $600 for materials and $300 for labor. It seems high.

just a wee bit(wow)

I can help you out with an install and a great price with the hand cutting on your car. $900 is way to much for a 3 or any car for that matter. Do you have the sedan or 5-door? Either way i got what you need and I am mobile in the Seattle area.

You can wash and wax as often as you like. The product has a clear coat finish on the film. The product if properly installed will no lift, peel or anything like that. Different companies offer different warranties on the film. Some use 3M's or LLumar warranties in terms of years up to lifetime or nothing at all.

Mine is lifetime for as long as you own the car for cracking, fading and/or yellowing. BTW, I have seen LLumar after six months and it is more visible than 3M that is why I havent started using it.

Let me know
