Mazda Protege 5 2002
Ok, so last night I finally got to take apart my brakes. Thanks sooo much for the how to on how to remove and clean in the how to section. Anyways, I will postp ictures tonight or tomorrow on the whole process and you guys can let me know if you see anything fishy. Ok, so I made sure to shake everything I could to make sure nothing is clanking or shaking or anything like that. I couldn't find anything! So, I went ahead and took apart the caliper, well, I didn't take off the caliper completely where you can remove the rotor if need, but just took out the 8mm allen wrench and slid the caliper up. Ok, so I looked in there and saw a lot of rust on the edge of the rotor all the way around. I figured that was somewhat normal for having 91000 miles on it. I went ahead to take aprt the brake pads and clean up the rotor a little bit and pads. The pads looked good to me. The only thing I saw was a small wear on the inside top corner of the pad. Other than that nothing I could find wrong with the pads. Looked around a lil more and couldn't find anything. I just cleaned her up a lil bit. So, I put everything back on. And started to drive off, the car didn't even make a noise it was soo quiet. Till about 3 or 4 min into it and I slowed down. AND!!! BAM!! The damn knocking noise starts up again! Blah!!!! I started swearing like a drunken sailor. So, what is my next step? Change the pads then work my way up after that if the problem persists? (I will have pics of everything up tonight or tomorrow, since I'm at work right now and can't access my camera.) Thanks, Dustin

also, I'm trying soo hard no to go to a dealership or brake service place. Because, money is tight and I'm a college student...

First Step in Fixing This Problem: Take it apart and clean!

This is my wheel and rookie painted calipers, I think they turned out ok!

Here is after it is taken off..tell me what you think..It looks like it needs
a little polishing.

So here is when I took the caliper off..I rigged it up to three strings and then let my other jack stabalize it.

Here is another view of my caliper raised up and the piston showing..a little rusty on the inside..

And here is the rotor...

so, here is the update so far....
The sun went down jsut as I was putting the wheel on. I noticed the wheel was more flush after I sanded it a little bit on the outside and back. I took it for a quick drive and made sure I pumped the brakes a lil before I got started. Guess what no sound! ...Woo Hoo...well knock on wood. But for 15min soo far I haven't had any noises or clanks, but! Let's give it another few days before I start cheering, as I know certain things like this are only a temp. fix. Moreover, what do you all think of what it looks like? Does it need some replacing or what? Rotor, pads, caliper? Let me know...Like I said in past posts...the car was bought as is and with 91000 miles, but this noise is the only problem out of anything I found. Thanks, Dustin

From what I can see, the pads look ok to me...
Did you check the rears as well? Good luck with it!

I'm having a clicking noise coming from my front brakes... just had the rotors resurfaced, and new pads installed... and as I'm braking from 30 mph down... particulary when I get to 10 and below... there's a loud clicking coming from either side up front... only when applying the brake... no pulsing in the pedal itself...

I took it back to my mechanic twice now... and he's certainly heard it on a test drive, but can't figure it out... my right rotor still has a little edge on the outer side, but outside of where the pads sits, so I'm guessing that's not it...

If this is the same thing that you were experiencing, any ideas for me?
Thanks in advance.

Dave

Well, I'm no expert, but I can say I have been studying this problem in depth for the past two weeks. The main things that people we having problems with were:

1. The rotor has rust built up all around it and it might not set properly or turn correctly.
Solution: Do what I did and use a 40 grit sand paper and clean up the rotor a bit. Not too much though, because it could warp you rotor.

2. The caliper piston is sticking and it's making a loud knocking or clank noise.
Solution: Replace the caliper and prolly both front or both rear, depending on where it is, so it will be balanced on both wheels. (Try a junk yard, or one of the online stores that the forum uses.

3. The rotor is warped. I think the only way you can really tell this, is if you get some type of measuring tool and mesaure from the hub to the rotor or something.

4. Pads could be wiggling inside of the caliper making a clicking noise. Pads are low. Something is wrong with pads, lol.

5. Could be the master cylinder, thsi is why you need to find out where the noise is coming from, I stuck my head out of the driver side, and my girlfriend stuck hers out the passenger, and it was her side.

Other than that I'm still working on it, but if the problem persists, than I will be testing these things out. If in doubt then jsut take it to a brake service place, but I wouldn't let them take your money, especially now with the economy.

5.

News Update: Not Good

Well, the popping noise started to come back. It's weird it came back slowly and progressively, it makes me think it was something I fixed last night, but it came back or moved back. Maybe the piston in the caliper is sticking? Hmmm..well, next things next..gotta get new pads...I know as of now it's not effecting my driving and I doubt it will be that unsafe, however I can't negelct it. It sucks not having money and this $%^& comes up. Oh well, cran kthe a/c on and listen to some loud music! ...until I change my brake pads..I'll let ya know if anything comes up...-Dustin

re: hole?

by the way...does anyone know what the fifth smal hole on the rotor is for? There was nothing in there when I took it off. And I put the rotor and wheel back on without it being aligned or set on that hole.... Thanks, Dustin

It's a threaded hole you use to break the rotor loose from the hub. Your popping noise is probably that blown strut I see in the pictures. See how it is covered in fluid and so is the lower suspension arm. That means your strut is losing its fluid and is no longer providing adequate suspension damping. You will have clunks as long as you have that POS on there. Replace them in pairs.

hmmm..strut...could you point it out on the pic for me? And what do you think the fluid is from?....btw how much and what do you mean by pairs....each side on my front wheels?

Look at the area on the picture I have attached. You'll notice how it looks wet, and has collected a lot of dirt in the area just above the two bolts. You've got fluid leaking out of your strut and running down the outside of the strut body. Yes each side on the front, and you'll just have to price them. There are many threads about struts on the forums. Tokico Blues seem to be a favorite.

Your struts are TOAST man. Those are probably part of the problem. The upper strut mounts could be causing the noise, along with the endlinks.

The strut is the big long wet black thing the spring is in.....

Yes, toast indeed.

Brakes may have needed to be done, but it's always best to find the REAL problem before you start throwing money at what you MAY think is wrong. I know you are new to working on your car, but don't hesitate to get someone's opinion or post pics on here. I would say the struts are definitely causing your clunking sounds.

damn, ok I'll get it checkedo ut next week...would I bea able to go a few more months riding liek this and than jsut replace all four?

Doing it yourself isn't too bad, the first one will probably take over an hour once you get the wheels, rotors and brakes off. But after that the other three will probably only take another hour to do. You will need a set of spring compressors. A decent pair can be had at either Autozone or Harbour Frieght for around $20. I'm sure there is a how to floating around somewhere on here, but I'll have to look.
Here's one, not the greatest. http://www.mazdas247.com/forum/showthread.php?t=52033
Here's another http://www.mazdas247.com/forum/showthread.php?t=6284
They're for springs, but really it's the same procedure.
