RX-8...

Just one more car that Mazda is using to try to imporve their image and it's the first rotary back in the States since they stopped sending over the RX-7 in '92.

Not to mention the RENSIS motor has won many awards around the world, and the RX-8 has won a few as well.

RX8 - unique, classic styling in a gorgeous package. Gotta love the renesis....you don't? Well F you then.

350Z - alright, another iconic nameplate, but falls short of living up to it's reputation. When I think of "Z" I think twin turbo terror. The new Z is just not all that great. I would think a factory Z should include a TT model...conversly, I don't think the RX8 needs the twin turbo as the motor is brand new and will get FI with more time.

IS300 - really? is this even a comparo? The IS300 is the ultimate mommy car. My wife likes 'em, nuff said. Too slow, too little power, too high a price tag. I'd personally rather have something else but if I was forced to own a Toyota this would be the one.

Yeah, but I have also been hearing some things about the rx-8 not really putting down decent power for a 30k car.

There are going to be pro's and con's about each car but I want to know what are the "issues" with each.

Mazda did make a mistake and misquote the HP for the rx8 right?

I'm not so sure the HP ratings are as low as Mazda says. Mazda (and most reputible tuners) know that the RX8 isn't able to dynoed on a chasis dyno. The car is so computer-laden that it will actually shut down power to keep the car from damaging itsself. Basically the car senses that the rear wheels are doing 50mph and the front wheels are standing still. This tells the car that something is way wrong and throws the car into "limp mode". I truely believe on an engine dyno the motor will pump 250hp. This is evident by the actual performance numbers. If you notice mazda keeps dropping the HP rating but the car stays just as fast. It's because the car makes the power on the road just not the dyno. As for the cost vs performance.....it's dead on! The RX8 is IMO a world class car. It handles, it accelerates, it brakes and it looks damn good doing it! Would an extra 50hp help? Oh yeah, but it's a good value for my money.

Rx8-Like the styling, great engine, and masterful car. (thinking of getting one)

350-LOVE, LOVE, LOVE. Yes people seem to think of the 300 series when they hear Z. However I do not focus on that, instead I focus on what the Z brand was suppose to be. A affordable track capable car with good performance. The 350 hits this on the head. The problem with the 300Z and 300ZX was it was way over priced, something no Z car was ever suppose to be.

IS300-Don't want it, I already have a mini-clone of it :D

RX-8 like the styling and the overall image, really like the autoEXE package. great car for $26k...

350Z should just be offered as the G35 coupe only IMO, because it is has cutdown the sports and emphasized the comfort. I love the G35 and would own that version over the 350 for about the same $.

IS300 has lots o' potential to be a monster (ala Altezza) but is really watered down and would almost trump the RX-8 in styling except for the suicide doors.

Mazda made the same horsepower mistake with the Miata.

They forget to put the US spec emissions equipment on the car.

And besides, it's not like it get's slower when they lower the number does it?

And I haven't heard of too many people turning in their cars becuase of it...

Mazda said 2% of RX8 owners returned the cars!! how lame! They did it just to be angry about something.

That's not that bad actually...

But yeah, they did it just for spite I think...

True, but some people rate the car by the specs published and the reviews rendered. They only know what "HP" feels like when they test-drive it. I personally know what 100-170 hp feels like compared to 200-250 hp, but some just love to know that they have high HP #'s

I bet you could have someone test drive a 175 hp rx-8 and they would think that was normal or "mad fast" just because Mazda's HP rating. Just because it looks like its fast does not mean it is ... "hello Mc Fly!"

I can see that. But there is more to a car than horsepower and ratings.

But, that is just MHO.

Rx8 - Awesome looks, Handles like it should, Everything Matty said is dead on. Not liking what Mazda did as far as pricepointing options and packages. I am not a fan of package options. Overall Great Car Good Value Needs a superpotent Mazdaspeed Version at about 38,000.

350z - I like how Nissan Styling has become more uniform throughout the brand more like the Germans. Mazdas getting there but Nissan has it nailed and the 350 is the perfect look to carry the brand. I could nitpick the performance stuff but in a nutshell : Great Price, Performance should be more awe inspiring instead of just "good all around"

IS300 - My little sister thinks they are cute! Seriously when it came out WOW! Seventeens stock (that used to be rare way back in the old days of 1999 :) ), awesome styling good handling attributes. But then EVERYBODY caught up and the IS300 is old news. Outpowered, Outstyled, Just Outgunned all the way around. In the end what did you expect from Toyota?

Winner: RX-8 just because its a little closer to its roots than the Z

Yeah, I feel much love for MAZDA and the RX-8, but I'll be honest ... I am torn between the 350Z and the RX-8 big time.

I love hoe NISMO has so much to do with the 350z aftermarket scene.
The one of the things that deters me from an Rx-8 is I dont know as much about a rotary compared to Nissans award winning 6.

I know the rx-8 is supposed to be like maintenance free and all but Im trying to see the whole picture. It just seems like the 350z seems to be of a higher class even though I know thats not necessarily true. Give me some more input here please and dont be partial to the rx-8 just because were on a Mazda forum thanks!

RX-8 fo sure. Sweet looking ride, ROTARY(that's just different and cool in its own right). And last but not least, its a MAZDA. This is my first mazda and still get excited when I drive. Oh, and the other's are nice, but no mazda.

To Mattys point so many people base their judgement on a cars performance on HP alone. Thats because the Auto industry has been shoving down people throats for SO long most people don't know any better. To the Masses Hp = speed. Most people couldn't tell you what HP measures or how it is determined. If the car performs who cares what the numbers say, they are all subjective. Especially in the case of computer controlled cars like the RX

agreed,

I think we all know that we dont need a 600 hp car to really enjoy a car but like I said most people think that a car is "better" or "faster" just because it has more HP ...

Does anyonw know how much HP a 18 wheeler has?!

Way more then a Rx-8, but who would win? ;)

The Eighteen Wheeler would smoke it..... Going down a steep grade hill with the brake lines cut

Without the trailer, the 18-wheeler would smoke the Rx8 in a straight line. No joke, seen a few run 12-13s without their trailers at the track.

But yes hp is not the end all factor in a cars performance.

But I also wonder what part of that precentage was actually based on people upset over the power misqoute? There surely were some people in there who just didn't like the car and saw this a free way out.
