Went down to two of the .. three audio dealers here.

Two 12" mtx 5500 series Subs - $120 each
forgot how much he quoted for the amp. some mtx amp
Kenwood deck .. forgot to get the model number. Was going for $240~ish. Not even an excelon model

other dealer

2 12"W3 JL subs $225 each
1 500/1 JL amp $500
1 Alpine CDA9851 $250

total $1250 w/tax.

Good prices?

and can anyone get me better prices on those items? I need a deck, two 12" subs, and an amp to push them

I can't help you on prices, but I just recently replaced my entire system due to theft, so I've done some shopping around and I can give you a few helpful (maybe) tips. If you just want a system that bumps nice, I'd go with the MTX and save some cash.

I owned 2 10" Thunder 6000 series, which are basically the equivalent of the 4500 series now (according to the MTX specs like xmax, wattage, and such). They sounded nice, and got loud when I needed them to. The sound quality was decent for the money. I'm sure the 5500s with the right amount of power will sound good too. With that said though, I own a JL 12W6v2, and if the W3v2 sounds half as good as the W6v2, I'd spend the extra money on the JLs!

I've used (and still use) MTX Thunder series amps. They are quite underrated and they sound great. My Thunder 502 is rated at 180x2 @ 2ohm and 12.5v, on the birth sheet: 214x2 at 2 ohm and 12.5v!! I'm using them to push JL Audio speakers, and though that may be heresy to some, I think it sounds awesome! And...Unless you're going to use all of the bells and whistles on the 500/1, I think you could save some cash here.

I'd also skip the Kenwood unless it's an Excelon, because other HUs at the same price points of the normal Kenwoods generally outperform them. Don't get me wrong, I've used Kenwood HUs for the past 8 years, but I know their basic line isn't the best out there for the money. The $250 price point Excelon is the KDC-x589. It's a nice unit, and has 24 bit Burr/Brown DACs for the CD section!! Crutchfield has free shipping on the x589 right now too!

I know Kenwood has a bad name among the MP3 and MSP crowd, but their new HUs are vastly improved. I've got the XXV-01D, and it's a beast!

You could also save $50 by going with the Alpine CDA-9847, which is basically the same as the 9851, but without the flip-down face. I definitely think the x589 has the $250 Alpine beat hands down though. Try this link: clicky!!

Hopefully I haven't confused you!

taking that all into consideration. I wanted a deck with a built in equalizer. My sony deck had a 7 channel equalizer built in. three pre outs.. front rear and sub, aux input.. remote..

it was pretty bad ass. 52 watts x4.. all the things I want in a deck.. too bad it had to break.

The Kenwood has 3 preouts (4 volt vs. 2 volt for the Alpine), and a 3 band parametric EQ (vs. 2 band for the Alpine). At the price point you're looking at, I don't think you'll find any HU with more than a 3 or 4 band EQ.

Keep in mind, you could go ebay, or another non-warranty route and probably find something way better for $250.

i have the Clarion ProAudio DXZ845MC, bought it for $200 a year ago and it sounds much better than the stock head unit and the red matches the stock guage color

i bought a kenwood 811d mono amp from a member here for $100 and it puts out a ton of power for the price and sounds really good

amp...http://www.onlinecarstereo.com/CarAudio/ProductDetail.aspx?ProductID=14030

deck...http://www.onlinecarstereo.com/CarAudio/ProductDetail.aspx?ProductID=13667

i run 2 RE 10" subs with it and they hit really hard for what they are and cost, but i'm gonna uprade to an acoustic elegance AV15 soon

RE...http://www.reaudio.com/html/
Acoustic Elegance...http://yellow.mynethost.com/~bv126368/shop/catalog/

just some ideas, not like you want the same system as me though;)

If you're going to be running the subs with the amp, why not go for the Thunder 3401? It's 400 watts at 2 ohms, and it's a Class D mono amp. It'll run cooler and more efficiently than the 5302. Plus, it'll give you more power for the same price.

Also, not to confuse you any more, but Sound Domain has the Thunder 3401 for $269.99!

I've never heard a Clarion deck, but that's not a bad price!

However, the Kenwood has 4 volt preouts and a 3 band EQ, vs. 1.8 volts and 2 bands for the Clarion. The preamp voltage isn't that big of a deal, but the EQ might be depending on your tastes. The Clarion definitely has the cooler display though. I'd love to be able to adjust my radio color like that! The Clarion also has Aux inputs, which are "optional" on the Kenwood, whatever that means...It seems like the Clarion might be the better buy.

Don't forget a box for the subs. I'd go to Best Buy or Circuit City for that though (to save shipping cost), unless you're gonna build your own.

I have a custom FG box that holds two 12"s

ok.. im like.. 99% set to go down there right now and pick up the 1 Alpine CDA9851 $250 .... any last words?

NOOOOOO KENWOOD! That's all I have to say hee hee. Any JVC's? Try crutchfield. You get free shipping (gotta spend at least something like +$250), they're delivering pretty fast, you get the tools etc to install your deck along w/ instructions...and too bad they no longer have MB Quart amps. Good luck on what you choose Steve...just NOOOOO KENWOOD...and depends on what kind of sound you want from your subs...anyways...peace out.

i agree, dont go with kenwood. i just got this deck off of crutchfield. i like it alot better than the stock msp deck. alot of features for the money

dont get a kenwood HU, better off with alpine, eclipse or clarion

my kenwood amp sounds pretty damn good for the price(10 cents per watt), but if you have $1/watt to spend buy a JL amp it's worth it

THe Jl setup is decent.
I wouldn't bother with that Alpine Deck though, Either get the 47 or the 53, the 51 is a waste. It doesn't have any usefull features over the 47.
Don't forget to look at Pioneer decks. Although it seems like you already purchased a JVC.
I would aviod all kenwood products. Especialy head units!
Amp wise, if you need more power per dollar then don't exclude JLs e series.

check out cardomain.com got pretty good prices and they do price matches on the net! also cructhfield has good combination deals like buy one sub get the other for like $20!

WHATS WRONG WITH KENWOOD HU'S?

planning on getting the excelon DDX-7017 Double Din DVD! sould i re-think? please inform!

i havent had good experiences with kenwood. the sound quality from the 2 decks i've had werent as good as the panasonic, alpine, pioneer or jvc ones i had.

There's nothing wrong with Kenwood! The problems that the MP3 and MSP HUs had was caused by the crappy way Kenwood used to attach their detachable faces (the D-MASK system). They now use a system that is like Alpine's, which is more reliable.

As for SQ, the Excelon line is the equivalent of anything Alpine, JVC, or Panasonic can produce. I've never heard an Eclipse deck, so I can't comment on that one. The base Kenwood units are decent, but they are generally not as good as other brands at the same price point.

Over the past 8 years, every time I have replaced a HU I have shopped around because I don't want to be blind to the possibilities of liking other brands of HUs. I always come back to the Kenwood Excelons in the end, and they have never let me down in SQ or reliability.
